    Clobbered DLLs

A friend loaded a program (I believe something like a Webster Dictionary or similar) and it really clobbered his computer. It would start up and then halt with an error message stating that it couldn't run COMCRTL32.DLL (or somthing similar, I'm going from memory right now). I found a Knowledge Base article that said to copy a file named CMM???? (again, I can't remember exactly) from SYSBKUP to SYSTEM32. This worked, and he now boots up ok.

His next problem was with Quick Books which popped up a message regarding COMMDLG.DLL. I had him copy this file from backup into SYSTEM32 and it solved the problem.

However, he has lost his Internet connection. His ISP tried helping over the phone with no success. I suspect that the problem is another missing or damaged or changed DLL, but IE and OE both open OK, they just won't connect to the net. Any suggestions as to what DLLs or other programs might be the problem with his connection? Unfortunately I cannot completely re-load W98 as he long ago misplaced his 98 CD, but if it's just a missing DLL or similar he should be able to restore it from the backup files.

    Hi Chuck,

Best guess here is that the internet connection settings got trashed in the melee. Easiest solution should be to create a new internet connection using the internet connection wizard and then delete the old connection. Your friend's ISP should be able to waltz you throught that one without too much trouble. Give 'em a call. That's all part of the monthly fee.

Just brush up on your English with an Eastern Indian accent first though <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>

    Hi Doc,

My friend has already tried for help with his ISP and they threw in the towel. So I'm looking for any other suggestions. Actually, I'm about to suggest that he upgrades to XP. That should solve all his problems unless he has some XP incompatible programs.

By the way, you are right on about the accent. Lately I have been helping many seniors from our church with their computer problems, and I've noticed the accents. In one case I asked where the tech rep was located and all they would say is that they are an international company -- Their English was good, but the accent really gave them away.

    Re: Clobbered DLLs

I was talking about setting up an entirely new internet connection using settings information provided by his ISP to be certain it was correct and then deleting his existing connection after confirming that the new connection works properly. To do this he should open Internet Explorer and go to Tools / Internet Options and click on the Connections tab and then on the Setup button, follow the prompts and enter the correct settings information as provided by his ISP.

If this doesn't work, I'd reinstall Windows over top of itself (although you said he misplaced his CD) or at least the version of IE that he was running, if he can find or DL that. HTH
