    Would anyone rdcoomend using XP for backs - it's there somewhere- or a bespoke prog?

    I never recommend using the built in backup program with any version of Windows. The worst feature is that each version of Windows can only restore backups made with the same version, so your old "archived" backups rapidly become unusable.

    You will find plenty of suggested programs in the Software finds and wants forum. A search in there for backup will turn up quite a few posts.

    That was a quick response, I found it after editing my previous post!

    I personally create weekly images backups with DriveImage, this creates full image backups but will happily do individual file restores. I also use WinZip command line to create daily ZIP archives of my data in yet another location (to be sure, to be sure).
