Nonbreaking space after ListNum field (Word 2002 (SP-2))

It appears that Word doesn't give effect to a nonbreaking space that follows a ListNum field. Is there a "best solution"?

I'm sorry; you're right. I forgot about that "little" problem, which ocurrs in previous versions also. The hard space doesn't work (I'll edit my previous post). The thing you can do is is use a Shift+Return before the dangling number, which will force it to the next line without incrementing it.

If you mean that typing a hard space (or any space for that matter) within the field itself (within the curly brackets that are applied with Ctrl+F9), that is true of other versions also.

Not much of a solution, though, since the Shift-Return will force it to the next line no matter how far across the page it may be, which may change from time to time as the document is modified or reformatted.

Given how common the outline-number-in-the-midst-of-text is in legal documents, I'm thinking there must be some kind of workaround.

Also: does anyone know if this has been fixed in Word 2003?

Re: Nonbreaking space after ListNum field (Word 2002 (SP-2))

I'm a Word newbie, so maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but no, I was talking about a nonbreaking space outside (and immediately following) the ListNum field. To get specific, on my Win XP Pro PC, running Word 2002 SP-2, if I have a sentence that reads in part, "Acme offers its customers (a) a superb selection of configurations, ( reliable service and support ...", and if I use ListNum fields for the (a) and the ( and use nonbreaking spaces for the spaces that follow them, Word is more than happy to break between the ListNum field and the following word -- i.e., it will wrap the lines so that (a) or ( ends up as the last word on the line (which is considered bad form around these parts).

    In my practice, I've never thought to use this. And I guess I won't start now. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
