    MSTASK

My PC, running W2K Professional, has recently started to provoke Norton Internet Security.
MSTASK.EXE is reported by Norton as trying to access the internet (See attachment)
My understanding is that MSTASK is a scheduler whose job it is to decide if anything needs running on my PC.
Why would it be accessing the internet?
Has the PC got a virus?
    Hope someone can help
    Thanks

Look at the C:winnttasks folder. Could be NIS itself trying to call home for updates.

    Re: MSTASK

I doubt that you have a virus. I've seen several Microsoft utilities trying to get to the network using various firewalls. While I see no reason for this to happen, I have also never seen any ill effects from denying the request, either. It is also not unusual for a program to send an ICMP echo across the LAN, but again - with Task Scheduler, I can't see any real reason for it doing so. I'd block it and see if anything results from that action.

    Re: MSTASK

What puzzles me is that the direction appears to be inbound. I would understand that to mean that MSTASK is trying to suck data in from the Internet...

    Re: MSTASK

    Hi loungers
Thanks for the replies. I haven't been able to get back earlier because I was unable to access the Lounge. Has it been down?
Anyway : Joe - looked in the folder you suggested and, apart from the programmes I have scheduled, there is something called Symantec Netdetect which has 'multiple schedule times' reported against it. Could this be it?
However, Googling for this shows I am not the only puzzled person out there. Found this bulletin board, which shows that their gurus are puzzled about this behaviour, too. FYI, I have exactly the same mstask.exe entries as the ones the poster reports back on this bulletin board.
Spybot and AdAware report my system is clean, and a Norton system scan reports no infection.
I can - and probably will - set Norton to permanently block internet access the next time mstask asks for it, but I don't like unsolved mysteries, and this has only just started happening. I'd like to bottom this out - using your brain power of course; mine ain't up to it! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
