FREE SOFTWARE. FOREVER. ???

Well, that's what it says here. Thought it might be a scam until I read that it's "ScamFree Certified by Tiger Investigations, Inc. - and they, carry guns." And I wondered about the quality, until I read that "An ex-NASA Engineer has designed YOUR software". I STILL couldn't FIGURE the need for ALL THE CAPITAL LETTERS on the WEBSITE though.

I'd be interested in how people find it before I take the plunge... coz I'm sure as heck not going to go first .

Good grief, it does go on a lot, doesn't it!

> Instead of someone like the BBB, I hired guys who carry guns - Law Enforcement Professionals - to certify everything AND protect you.

I'm not quite clear on the connection between "guys who carry guns" and "software". Though as a Unique Selling Proposition, it certainly is unique!!

Perhaps I'll just give this one a miss...

(and I don't know what the BBB is, either!)

How about the software they offer, titled "How to steal from PayPal"?
That's where you use the guys with guns?
No thanks.

Never looked in that kind of detail. Is that really its title?

Edited - Yes it is. I can't believe it! I Googled for this title and this junk is all over the web - all with connections to this same shonky site.

You'd have thought that the existence of this software might well have tipped off PayPal that they might have a little problem-ette, and ought to deal with it sharpish?

After all, look how rapidly Microsoft fixes security exposures!!

With sites like these, Paypal should already be aware that they have another teensy problem:

Thanks for those links -- I was not previously aware that PayPal had "issues"! It certainly doesn't appear to fall within the UK regulations/recommendations for the processing of payments...

Re: FREE SOFTWARE. FOREVER. ???

Hi Alan,

Noticed something interesting related to your note and my ISP (Sympatico.ca).

Sympatico provides for their users, an anti-spam feature at no cost. The feature can be tweaked by the user in one of 3 modes... 1) move all suspected spam to a special folder on the Sympatico site (allowing the user to scan the suspected spam before deletion), 2) discard all suspected spam outright or 3) ignore the feature and let all mail flow through to the user's system. All rules to identify spam are under the control of Sympatico's software but it does allow the user to provide a "safe" and "block" list.

I have tested Sympatico's settings on several occasions and found their software to be fairly accurate in identifying spam. A few days ago I changed the settings from outright deletion to the option of moving suspected spam to the special Sympatico folder. Of 73 messages, 72 were indeed spam but the remaining one wasn't. That message was headed up "FREE SOFTWARE. FOREVER. ???" and was part of the daily message downloads from The Lounge.

It would appear that Sympatico's software zeroes in on certain keywords and considers case to be part of the scanning algorithm. Your message obviously pushed the right spam buttons. So what I have learned is that when I compose an e-mail I'll use mixed case in the subject matter and stay clear of keywords that might be interpreted as spam.

Just thought you might be interested in what one ISP is doing and how it can affect legitimate mail.

Cheers, Bob
Regards,
Bob

Re: FREE SOFTWARE. FOREVER. ???

That's the problem with spam filters that scan based on a list of keywords...but no spam solution is perfect either. Once the crap starts flowing into a given email address, it's hard to stem the tide. I suppose I could rant on and on about it, but I'd be preaching to the choir...
