    Internet Shortcuts

Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL tag. See the markup help. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

How come if I right click on an internet page, and select to create the shortcut to the desktop, it isn't a "standard" shortcut? Which is to say that I am unable to select special icons etc. for the shortcut?

I have d/l the Avant browser (http://www.avantbrowser.com/) ... has this modified the environment / desktop in some way to alter the shortcut process? If so, can I set it back?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Re: Internet Shortcuts

I can't speak directly to what Avant does, but I know it uses the IE engine to render web pages. Outside of that I don't think it makes any drastic changes. Do you not have a Change Icon button when you right-click the shortcut and select Properties?

No, I only have the "General" tab... not the "Shortcut" tab...

Strange... but the browser itself (otherwise) is seemingly quite good...

    Re: Internet Shortcuts

Chuck, I have no idea if this will work, but it's worth giving a try. Click Start - Run and enter regsvr32 urlmon.dll in the box, then click OK. Reboot. See if your tab has come back.

I'm suggesting this because it's possible that a DLL needs to be re-registered. Whether that's the case here or not, I cannot say for certain - nor even whether this is the proper DLL to re-register. But as I said, it's worth a try...

    Re: Internet Shortcuts

This works in Mozilla and IE6. Set the size of the browser window to something less than max, so you can "see" some amount of the desktop. Use the small icon at the left-end of the URL (address) bar and drag it to the desktop. That resulting shortcut will have not only a General tab, but one called Web Document.

Edited to add: Oops! Not quite I'm afraid. After doing what I suggested and changing the icon, it appeared to work OK. Except that when I clicked "OK" to finish, the on-screen icon had not changed! Drat. When I clicked Properties again and went back in, the icon had reverted back to its original. Looks like you CAN'T change the icon of a URL shortcut, or we've not yet found the answer. Maybe it has to be changed globally.

That may be the case... If I set Netcaptor as the default browser, the tabs are there... so it IS something program-specific...

    Re: Internet Shortcuts

Your experiment with NetCaptor being set as the default is interesting. Since the registered browser is responsible for the shortcuts, the partially explains why you can't change the icon. Maybe even fully explains it? Ah well, I'm going to plug Mozilla Firefox again, and suggest you give that a spin if you're interested in alternate browsers. I really do think you would be that much happier with it.

    Re: Internet Shortcuts

Interesting research, Al. Chuck seems to be having an issue even getting that tab to appear. I think what you've stumbled on is the standard behavior for URL shortcuts, which are handled differently in the system. Why you would not be able to change the icon...I couldn't say. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, frankly. I'll be digging into this more myself because I detest not understanding something!!

    Mark:

I do plan on trying Firefox...

I too find this scenario interesting, 'cause, as you noted, the default browser ought to be able to control the details...

I may be looking at nothing more than a weakness -0- on Avant's part to control the url connection(s) (is that what this is?), and, actually, Netcaptor has it's own brand of 'leak' -- for if I am downloading a file, I cannot shut down Netcaptor without losing the download (which I CAN do with IE and Avant both), so I guess it's just a case of who's weakness(es) you care to ignore or work around for the sake of the overall benefits gained...

    Ya think?

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Re: Internet Shortcuts

Sounds reasonable to me. To be perfectly honest, I find the whole Internet Explorer engine and anything built on it to be one huge weakness. Simply by virtue of using Firefox, I am no longer suspect to the vast majority of security exploits and other nuisances that are enabled by its "technology" and "integration." Add to that that I have forgotten what pop-up ads are like, and I'm in heaven, surfing the web the way it used to be. The only thing I need IE for anymore is Windows Update.

It might be worth posting in the Other Browsers board and seeing if other Avant users have similar experiences.

I'm trying Firefox now... interestingly, my homepage, MSNBC, has one "popup" (is it?) that will not show... just to the right of Martina McBride's pic... does it show on your's? if so, how'd ya do it?

    I'll keep poking around...

    Re: Internet Shortcuts

Chuck, I saw no pop-up near Martina. I viewed the page in Firefox and IE both. I disabled pop-up management in Firefox, as shown in the attached, and disabled the GoogleBar in IE. After "enabling" pop-ups, I got an X-10 ad in IE, and nothing in Firefox, not even a notification that a pop-up had been blocked (directly below the options panel in the attached).

I'm not sure what you are expecting to see, but it appears normal to me. As you can see in the attached, in FireFox you can allow pop-ups for any website you choose, permanently. Any time you see the blue "i" in the lower corner, it means that a pop-up has been blocked. Clicking on that symbol will provide you with a dialog where you can enable pop-ups this one time, or permanently for the site.

Hope that helps...if I'm missing something here, please tell me!

Might be just video (beta?)... I just went to the page again, and Andrea Mitchell was covered when Rumsfeld SLID over her...?? Strange...

The bottom left option is neat... I'll touch base as the investigation continues...

    Re: Internet Shortcuts

Aye, I noticed a slight rendering problem there too. Most of the time when you see that, it's because Microsoft's sites are designed to work with sloppy (read: Microsoft-oriented) coding standards. IE will render things that it really should choke on, and FireFox is stricter about HTML code and standards. Fortunately, this is a rare phenomenon, even if sloppy coding standards make it a more common nuisance than it should be.
