    footnotes in columns

    How do I tell Word97SR2 to list my footnotes in columns?

    I am in landscape mode with a table that stretches from side to side. In certain cells I choose Insert Footnote. The footnotes are brief - six words each at most, and occupy not one-third the page width. I'd like to gang them up side-by-side to make better use of each sheet of paper, and to permit more rows of table to be visible on each page.

    I've tried Format Columns, but it is disabled.

    I thought of Edit-Cut with a clutzy mid-section section, but even when the footnote text is selected, it can't be cut.

    I don't know of any way to put Footnotes in columns other than using Endnotes, then format the Endnotes in columns but if you must have the notes on the same page then this wouldn't suit. I think the footnote features have to be taken pretty much as they're shipped with Word.

    After reading <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/FtnoteSpanColumns.htm>http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/F...SpanColumns.htm</A>, all I can say is "hmmmm."

    Give it a look-see.

    Yep! Coincidentally when I read my e-mail at the office today one of the newsletters I subscribe to covered this very topic. I intended to e-mail it home for Chris but this is the same site. How about that! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: footnotes in columns

    Right. But this is for footnotes-to-spane-a-page-when-text-is-in-columns, right? I've got text across the page, and stubby little footnotes that I'd like to see in three columns.

    <pre>1. see alpha
    2. see beta
    3. see gamma
    4. see delta
    </pre>

    ... takes up too much space. I want

    <pre>1. see alpha 2. see beta 3. see gamma
    4. see delta
    </pre>

    Re: footnotes in columns

    Although I do not recommend doing this because it can have consequences later down the road -- you can edit the style "Footnote Text" to set tabs at 2.75 and 4.5 and then after inserting the notes apply "hidden" font attribute to the paragraph marks. The attached is very rough, and although I tabbed before the footnote references in the FN, I would suggest instead that a tab be your last character in a given FN.

    Not very pretty, but if you want to save the trees...

    Re: footnotes in columns

    I'll take another look at this; at first glance it appears to squeeze the footnote space into about 1/3 the horizontal space available to it in the window, but the foornotes still appear one under the other, with the 2/3 window empty to the right of them.

    Let it go.

    It's not an earth-shattering issue. I was mainly curious in case I'd missed something, especially given MSoft's use of the "story" and "window" and
    "pane" concepts as things-to-hold-text.

    The hedaer/footer area seems to function like the main document in that one can Ctrl-A to select all, and yet i now note that I can't set columns in the footer area either.

    Possibly because MSoft uses section-breaks to implement column formatting, and so footers, footnote areas etc can't be allowed to have their own section breaks within a section.

    If they DID implement columns within footers within non-columned text, I'd probably get upset in the other direction, knowing me.

    Neat trick. This allows adherence to "Hart's Rules" of typesetting for short footnotes.

    Any rules written by me are not <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15>
    Send <img src=/S/money.gif border=0 alt=money width=17 height=15> now.
    Oh dear, my head's hurting again <img src=/S/headthrob.gif border=0 alt=headthrob width=15 height=15>.
    I'd better go and get <img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15> now

    Either turn of show/hide, or view in print preview.
