Word Para Numbering (Word 2003)

    Any help please.

I've been sent a doc, which I'm trying to update with amongst other things, a proper para numbering.

The attached file shows my problem. I've got para numbering working fine with the Heading 1 levels, but Level 2 seems to be working wrongly.

I can't see what I've done wrong however, but 1.34 should be 7.4, 1.35 should be 8.1 etc

    Thanks

I haven't saved the references, but I've read on this board many times in the past that if you are assigning numering to Heading styles, you should open Heading

Re: Word Para Numbering (Word 2003)

The problem is almost certainly caused by the headings not being attached to different levels in the same list template. This can happen if you change the bullets and numbering format of one heading level without modifying all of them at the same time.

    The solution is to

Define all attributes of your various heading levels the way you want, except for the numbering

Position the insertion point in a level 1 heading

Format Bullets and Numbering and set the level 1 heading how you want it to appear

DO NOT close the bullets and numbering dialog box until you have completed all the rest of the steps

Select level 2 in the same dialog box and set the numbering format

Make sure that the level 2 heading is associated with your heading 2 (see graphic)

Do the same for levels 3 to 9 without closing the dialog box

When you have set all the numbering styles for all heading levels you can exit the dialog box[/list]For more information see Word Numbering Explained

I'll also add that Stuart's screen capture highlighted the style attached to a list level but there is also a tick box to the right and below that one that is relevant. If the second level is to restart after the Level 1 entry is used then you need to select the Restart Numbering option and set this to the level above.
