    Re: Systray Icons (XP Pro)

The last update I installed was released on 11th May, kb840374 detailed here. Windows update shows no further updates available so this was probably the update you installed. I have not experienced any problems with this update.

    Re: Systray Icons (XP Pro)

Well that's strange... I use this machine everyday and I remeber installing an update on the 14th and when I got to the computer this morning, there was another prompt in my system tray for another update...

Is there a way I could check the updates installed on my PC? I don't think that checking Add/Remove Programs is the way as some of the updates are not reversible and would probably not appear in the list.

On the Windows Update site click "View installation history". This should give details of all the updates you have installed and hopefully a microsoft knowledge base article number for the update.

Thanks for letting me know how to check on the updates. This is what I found:

    Tricky,
Have you right clicked the taskbar and selected properties and unselected "hide inactive icons"?

    Re: Systray Icons (XP Pro)

Thanks Bob. I did check that setting but that wasn't the problem, either.

I've been on the MS Support Bulletin Boards and found several other people with same issue. In fact, there is a thread started at May 15, 2004 9:56 a.m ., where at least two others have the identical problem and one had it happen after installing the latest Windows Security Update.

Maybe it takes a combination of things to occur for the problem to exist.

    Systray Icons (XP Pro)

The only thing I've installed today is the new windows update that appeared in my system tray this morning...

Now, when I reboot, all of the icons in my system tray no longer appear. It's usually only two: My email program keeps an icon there that alerts me when I have new messages, and Karenware Replicator.

I've rebooted countless times to no success. I've checked MSCONFIG | STARTUP and it all looks fine. The check boxes for those programs are ticked. When I try to start Replicator from the regular menu, I get an error message "Program is already running".

So, the startup programs ARE starting up. There's just no icons to indicate this in the notification area (systray). IS anyone else experiencing this problem after applying the latest Windows Security Updates?

Do you have a copy of TweakUI?

How about trying to go to the repair/rebuild icons option. Won't hurt.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do have TweakUI but that didn't solve the issue, either.

    Re: Systray Icons (XP Pro)

    Tricky,

Do you have a copy of either Belarc Advisor or Aida32?
Both of these will show all of the SUCCESSFULLY installed hotfix patches on your machine.
So if you feel it was a hotfix that caused the problem, open the WIndows folder, select the hotfix number and use it's uninstall exe to roll it back.
If that doesn't do it you can always reinstall the patch.

Every individual configuration MAY present a problem to some, that others may not have.
