Pause and tone in WinXP (Windows XP)

Ok.......NO LAUGHING!! I thought this was just happening while in IE browser, but it happens when I am in any application. I will be in the middle of something, and the system will pause, and make a tone, not unlike the tone that the system makes when a USB device connects or disconnects. I have checked all of the USB & firewire devices, and none of them seem to be causing the problem. The system just pause briefly, and makes the tone. It is especially annoying when I am on the browser. Any ideas??

Check the Sounds settings in the Conrol Panel.

Are you connected to the Internet when this happens? Do you have any applications listening for contact from intelligent (or unintelligent) life in cyberspace, such as a chat application? Do you run a firewall program?

I am always connected to the internet. The only messenger program that I run is AIM, but I have been running it for years. Windows Messenger opens up whenever I open Outlook even though I tried to follow the instructions in the Lounge to get rid of it. The only firewall I have is that my internet runs through a Linksys router.

Kathy,
First, I'd recommend installing a firewall on your PC. Multiple layers of defense are much better. Routers are not infallible or totally secure. Second, do you have a USB hub? If so, can you switch the devices to other ports? Can you turn off the devices one by one to see if it is an intermittent power problem? Have you check the USB cables at both ends (PC/hub & device)?

Yes, I have checked all of the device connections. In fact, they were all just reinstalled recently because of other issues with my machine. I will try turning them off one by one to see if that helps. I do have a hub, but not all of the USB devices are connected to the hub, but are connected directly to the machine.

Kathy,
In some logical fashion perhaps you can switch devices from the hub to a port & back. If you are approaching the power limit for the hub (and I can't remember what that is off the top of my head) slight surges or dips in power could be the problem.

It is a 2.0 4 port POWERED hub. It has only 1 or 2 items plugged in on a regular basis. I use the other two occasionally when I connect my media card reader, my Palm, or my USB flash drive. However, these items are never plugged in on continual basis.
