Changes to Global Tempate (Word 2003)

Every time I close Word I get a message stating that changes have been made to the Global template Normal.dot and do I want to save them. Even when I say Yes, the same message pops up the next time I exit. Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to kill it?

While there are many possible reasons for this, if you can start Word, then close it and get the message, an add-ins changing the menus or toolbars in Normal.dot is the most probable cause. Many add-ins make such changes every single time they load (often, every time you start Word), even if they made it the previous time. Follow Phil's "systematic approach" thread if you want to figure out exactly which add-in is causing it. One recently released culprit was Microsoft's metadata tool, which adds stuff to the File menu.

You are probably right in that I have one add-in installed in Word (it links to my TextBridge OCR program), and that's probably what causes the message. I got rid of the popup message by going to Tools|Options|Save and unchecking the "Prompt to save Normal.dot" box.

    Hi Chuck:
Gettting rid of the message is probably not a good idea. While it can be annoying at times, that message will tell you if something (like a virus) is changing normal.dot. What I typically do, is just answer "No" to the message unless I truly want to change normal.dot. In your case, if an add-in is simply adding & subtracting toolbars every time you start & exit from Word, there is no need to save these changes.

It doesn't matter whether I answer no or yes, the question appears every time, and I find that annoying.

I understand the motive behind your advice, but I'm counting on my virus checker and firewall to avoid loading any nasty macros.

Chuck, I agree completely with Phil - don't turn off the "Prompt to save normal.dot". By chance, do you have Microsoft's "Remove Hidden Data" add on installed? Jefferson referred to it (metadata tool) in his post and it will trigger the message every time. See <post#=354708>post 354708</post#> .

Yes, I have "Remove Hidden Data" in the File menu. However, I went to Customize and looked at all the entries under the File menu, and "Remove Hidden Data" isn't to be found. Curious!

I think this is an add-on...which means you'll find it either in one of the Word or Office startup folders or in the templates folder.

Chuck, this will be in the list of installed programs. Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall it. Then go to Word, customize, and drag "Remove Hidden Data" off the file menu (the uninstall does not remove this). From then on, should be clear sailing.
