OK to Fill Desktop with Shortcuts?

I regularly need to copy the same 50 or so files from my notebook to my PC and vice versa. To make this easy, I've stored all of the files in one folder on each computer, and I can then ZIP the folder and copy it to a floppy for transport. At the same time, I want the files to be easy to find, so I have shortcuts to the files stored in folders on my Desktop. In short, my Desktop has about 50 shortcuts but no files.

Someone was tellling me that having so many shortcuts on the Desktop isn't good practice. Is he right?

    Thanks for any advice.

I've not heard of an OS-imposed limit - it's more like "what can you stand," visually. One thing you could do, and I do myself, is create folders on the desktop into which you put shortcuts to a number of files. That holds down the desktop clutter somewhat, but still lets you be able to get to the files quickly, by some "category" for axample. I'd say it's a matter of personal preference more than anything else.

That's probably the same person who wants to be able to see your desktop (the other, horizontal desktop, that is). I think it's more a matter of clutter control than any risk of losing data, but maybe he knows something we don't know.

On the earlier OS's (95, 98 and Me) these could eat up the "64K Resources" real fast. But on the NT, 2000 and now XP the 64 limit has been done away with.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I just have the most used shortcuts as the left-hand column on the desktop, and size all windows so that this column is visible at all times.

Why don't you use a BATch file to ZIP all the files for you? Then you'd only need a single shortcut!!

too bad that site didn't have a screenshot of what a 'desktop' would look like...I really don't care to d/l a program w/o seeing what the end results look like. <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

There's a screen shot here: http://www.comcen.com.au/~scottford/...es/Topdesk.jpg Seems like a fairly benign utility.

    Hi Lonnie

The screen print that Mark's link points to shows the menu list from the sys tray icon. From this menu, you select the folder/file that you want and it will open in the case of a file/program or place a Folder Menu on the desktop which you can minimize to the taskbar.

I like it and use it. It keeps my large number of shortcuts organized and keeps my desktop clean.
I have several folders, named by program of file category, into which I've placed the appropriate shortcuts.

    Have a Great day!!!

Re: OK to Fill Desktop with Shortcuts?

Thanks...still too messy for my taste. From what I understand...this is next to the clock? That would mean everything is loading up at startup - not good!
Guess I will just keep my desktop w/my shortcuts as is.

Re: OK to Fill Desktop with Shortcuts?

    Hi Lonnie

Yup.....it loads at startup.....all 276.5K...not all that much of a hit, eh?
Anyway......I use it and find it keeps my desktop clean and my shortcuts organized.....definitely not "messy". It doesn't conflict with any other software and is easy to use.
Others may not want to use it, nor even try it.......that's OK by me.....I just enjoy searching out free, or nearly free, software on the web and checking it out. This one was a "keeper" for me.

    Have a Great day!!!
