Track Changes Options

[Using Windows 95 and Word 97]

I cannot view, and therefore change, the track changes-options fields. The whole options panel, including the general tools-options-track changes, are grayed out [no fields or text visible]. I have conducted the following investigations so far:

the track changes work on another computer - therefore it is not the document.
track changes view options does not work on new small documents.
I have changed the file and it still does not work.

Re: Track Changes Options

Hi Claude,

This is due to a little corruption in the Registry.

Exit Word and in the Registry drill down to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice8.0WordDat a

and delete the Settings value on the right. Word will rebuild this upon restarting.

If you need step-by-step instructions and information on backing up the Registry see this article:

The article is primarily written for missing toolbars, but the steps will apply.

Also, rebuilding the Settings value will result in lost customizations in Tools/Options, Tools/AutoCorrect, and a handful of other misc. preferences. See this article:
for a list of what will be reset and a method you can use to preserve the values.

Note that if you do choose to use the method for preserving your user preferences and record a macro, the existing Tools/Options data will be recorded even if you are unable to see them in the dialog box.

Thanks for your help. It worked a treat. The same problem has happened a couple of times since. I suppose I am maxing out my computer.
