Windows Explorer crashes (XP Home SP-1)

I've had this constant nagging problem from the day I bought my computer with Windows XP Home installed; nearly 3 years now. I have formatted the HD and reinstalled XP several times and the problem persists. It can occur several times per day and it has finally gotten "old".

The Problem: Windows Explorer crashes with little provocation. It can be simply opening Explorer, or right clicking on a file, or copying over a file from one folder to another, etc. When this happens, everything freezes for about 20 seconds and then the screen refreshes. Many of the icons for running programs in the SystemTray do not return but the programs are still running. After that, everything works fine with no further crashes. Rebooting is the only way that seems to restore the SystemTray.

Doing a search on the MS website resulted in finding one article which seems to address the issue but the "fix" is to call Microsoft for some private patch. Since XP was installed by the Manufacturer (private build), it is considered to be OEM and thus not eligible for free support. So, before I spend the $50 Cdn to ask MS for the patch to fix this known issue, I am hoping someone here can help.

Thanks,

Jeff

Tell us more about the hardware and what software you are running?
All of these or any one of them could be the problem. It most likely is NOT the OS as it runs on to many systems with out a hitch. It could be the hardware and/or software combination that you have.

What shows in your event logs when the crash occurs?

Re: Windows Explorer crashes (XP Home SP-1)

Dave,

My hardware has changed over the past couple of years with the exception of my HD, Zip Drive and CD ROM so I'm not sure hardware is the culprit, however here is what I have:

AMD Athon XP 1.8
512 megs SDRAM (Xerox)
MSI K7T266 Pro 2
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX-400
Intel 10/100 Ethernet Card
Creative SB Live
LG CDROM 8522B
Liteon 52246S CD-RW
IOmega 250 Zip

As far as software goes.... too many to list. But major items would be:

Microsoft Office 2000 Premium
Diskeeper 8 Pro
Norton SystemWorks Pro 2003

Again, from what I found on the MSKB, this is a known problem with some machines running XP. Microsoft does have a "fix", but you are required to contact them directly to get it.

The next time it happens, I'll take a look in the Event Viewer. It's hard to tell what item belongs to this event. The only error showing is a DCOM error #100005 in the "System" section. Sorry I can't be of more help.

You might consider clearing the logs so you have less to comb though. You can always save them if you suspect there is anything meaningful in them.

Dave's idea about hardware made me wonder if perhaps the RAM is faulty, or the socket that it lives in? You could try changing slots for the RAM, or temporarily reducing it if you are not using one single stick with 512 on it.

Mark,

Cleared the 3 sections of the Event Viewer and await for Windows Explorer to crash again. (it has a mind of its own)

I will consider moving my one 512 meg stick to a different slot too.

This may sound strange, but I understand the the power supplies need to be on the approved list when using a AMD processor. I do NOT have a AMD machine. Is your PS on the approved list?

I'm going to have to assume that it is. Of course, if you would direct me to where I might peruse this "Approved List", I could find out for sure.

Like I said I do not use the AMDs but, I think if you were to go to AMD.com you may find it.

Re: Windows Explorer crashes (XP Home SP-1)

Dave,

Here's an update on this situation. I broke down and called Microsoft Support via . I explained the problem and the Tech was privy to it and acknowledged it as a known issue. He immediately sent me a link to download a private "patch" that will hopefully resolve Windows Explorer crashes. I was also pleasantly surprised when there were no charges involved even though my XP installation is OEM. The only cost incurred was the long distant call.

I do have a further question however, as there are two separate "patch" files to download and I would like to be 100% that I install the right one.

They are listed for two types of "Platforms":

1) ia64
2) i386

I am assuming that I want the i386 file and that the ia64 file is for 64-bit XP versions??

Re: Windows Explorer crashes (XP Home SP-1)

Mark,

Thanks for the confirmation. If you don't hear back from me, regarding this matter, you may assume that the "patch" worked and the problem resolved.

FYI, the MSKB article which I concluded addressed the issue is found here: MSKB #824136.

Re: Windows Explorer crashes (XP Home SP-1) UPDATE

I'm sorry to report that Microsoft's "Hotfix" didn't work. After a couple of days of crash-free operation, which isn't that unusual, Windows Explorer crashed once again without warning. I've contacted the Tech Support team again and hope that they will have something further for me to try.

Did you happen to check the event viewer for clues after the crash?
