Windows Explorer expands subdirectory list (SP1)

Shifting from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, I found one "feature" that really annoys me: when I select a directory by clicking its name in the Explorer Bar, it automatically displays the subdirectories. This is a small inconvenience, but it happens dozens of times every day. How can I make it stop?

Select Tools | Folder Options... and activate the View tab.
Clear the "Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list" check box and click OK.

Glory be, it works! I've been living with that problem for almost a year. One would think they would give the option a name that gave some clue to its function, or at least put a reference in the help file that a person could find he needed it but did not know its name. But no, this is Microsoft.

That's why it is necessary to have someone like Hans, with breathtaking knowledge and capability!

But I read in today's "Microsoft Insider Update" that you can Become an Office expert in less than 50 minutes -- or so it says...

Thanks Hans. I've been looking for that setting for awhile myself .

As to John's reference to Become an Office expert in 50 minutes...." I've heard a rumor that if you take the course and pass, MS offers you a job in their Office Technical Support department.

Hans

At the risk of sounding stupid, what is the "Explorer Bar?" I use the Classic View for my Windows Explorer and I have changed that option and see no difference.

Thanks.

The Explorer Bar is the left-hand pane of Windows Explorer, containing a treeview of the drives and folders on your computer. I haven't tried all possible permutations and combinations of view settings to see if the option has the same effect in each of them.

Hans,

Thanks I thought that might be what it was and the setting has no apparent affect on my Windows Explorer.
