    Renaming New Folders (XP Home)

I have a correspondent who can't rename New Folders he has created from a right-click. The 'rename' option is greyed out. Can't do it from the Explorer File menu, nor the folder Proeperties, nor from a command line. So he says.
    Beats me, any ideas?

Could he be in someone else's account and not have permission? Not even sure if that is something that requires permission.

If he has created them using his own account then by definition he is Creator-Owner, and should be able to do anything he likes with them! I can't find anything on a TechNet search, I'm afraid... Is he using an Administrator account or a Restricted one (I presume the former)?

This can happen if one has the Add or Create permission, but not the Modify and Delete permissions. (I'm sure if I experimented I could narrow that down, but I'd have to go all the way across the building...)

Very true, but I had assumed that the user would not be "mucking around with the file permissions" -- of course it would be good to ask, because some users are capable of anything!!

Can they left click on the file once to highlight the file name and then left click on it again to insert the cursor into the folder name at the desired location highlight the folder name and use the Delete key to remove the old name? Then type the new name?

Re: Renaming New Folders (XP Home)

Another method of renaming a folder (or file) is to highlight the folder name and then press the F2 key. However, I suspect the "permissions" issues raised by all the astute posters might prevent such an action... but, it might be worth trying.

Yes, I assumed this was on a server. My bad not to state my assumptions.
