    Desktop (Windows XP Home)

The taskbar at the bottom of my desktop has suddenly doubled in height. I can't seem to get it back to normal height. Help? <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

If you right click (an empty part of) the task bar, is the "Lock Task Bar" item in the popup menu checked? If so, click it to unlock the task bar. You should then be able to change its height. If you prefer, you can lock it again.

Lock task bar is not checked. I get the two headed arrow when I hold the mouse left click down and move over the edge of the task bar but it doesn't do anything.

Mmm, do you happen to have two toolbars above each other in the task bar? If so, try dragging the upper one down and to the right of the other one. Perhaps you will then be able to reduce the height of the task bar.

If that doesn't work, right-click the task bar and select Properties. Make sure that the Lock Taskbar, Auto-Hide Taskbar & Keep Taskbar on Top check boxes are all cleared and click OK. Try to resize the task bar. If you succeed, you can restore the original settings if you like. You can also tick the three check boxes, click OK, then clear the check boxes and click OK.

I have found the taskbar's behavior to be a bit touchy at times. Try dragging down past the edge of the screen and see what happens, and then slowly moving back upwards if it resizes itself.

This might be what Hans is referring to, but I have found it is possible to drag the QuickLaunch bar underneath open application buttons on the taskbar, which appears to have the effect of locking it into a minimum height of 2 rows. (See attachment.)
If so, left-click just to the right of the left-hand 'slider bar' on the QL and the cursor should turn into 4-headed arrow for repositioning.
