FD Not Formated (XP Pro)

I have a 3.5" FD that reports as being not formated when I attempt to access files on it.
It has been formated and has data files on it.
I have tried checking the disk for errors and having them repaired but it doesn't appear to accept it.
Does anyone have any sugestions on what else I could try to access the files on the disk?

Thanks

Were the files originally written to the FD by the same drive?
Can you read the files in another PC?

I find FD drives are notoriously incompatible and unreliable these days - how old is the drive you are trying to use?

I'll agree with Leif here - floppy drives are horrible in regards to compatibility with one another. The heads are rarely aligned properly.

Try the disk in another system and if you can access the files there, make a copy of them. Format a floppy in the XP system and see if the alternate PC can read the XP formatted floppy. If it does, transfer your copied files to the readable disk...and avoid floppies wherever possible in the future!

You will be aware of USB memory/disk drives (various names, like Pendrive) which hold multiples of 16 MB up to about 1 GB and are about 3" long by 1" wide. These are ever so much better than floppy disks for capacity/speed/reliability, and not especially expensive (unless you want the 1 GB ones!). They work on operating systems from 98SE (with a driver) upwards, except for NT (curses!).

I'd be cursing if I still had to use NT myself, John!

Thanks for the replies.

The FD is a friend's, he couldn't access it & asked me to try. It hasn't worked in my FDD either. My FDD is probably a few years old now as I am a "Pendrive" fan so don't have much use for my FDD as you have sugested.
I'll keep trying a few other FDDs in other systems to see if I have any luck.

It could be a MAC disk - Windows always says they're not formatted.

Of course, he would have to find someone in this world that has a MAC ( except Bowlie ) to check it.
