    MSN Messenger blocked by AOL

My son accesses the web via AOL 9.

I set parental controls to limit access to the web, but unless it is set to "adult", MSN Messenger is blocked.

I contacted AOL, but they couldn't help & MSN Messenger support didn't understand the question!

I assume that, when MSN Messenger is started, it goes to a specific website, which is being blocked,

Is there anyway of finding out the address, so I can put it his "allow" list?

    Many thanks,

    Kevin

You may have picked up some "Messenger SPAM" that is tied to an adult site. Run AdAware and Spybot S&D, then you AV program (after updating each one, of course) and if that doesn't turn up something you might want to consider getting a copy of "Hijack This" and have the results analyzed for problems.

What are the chances that AOL is doing this to sabotage people who want to use Microsoft's IM software instead of AOL's IM software? Hmmm...

(Obviously I have no answer for how AOL works, I haven't used it for at least 5 years.)

Re: MSN Messenger blocked by AOL

    Dear Doc,

Thank you for the suggestion, but this problem occurs on different computers. I have run both programs you suggested, and they are clean.

When I change my son's settings from Teen to Adult, he can then connect to MSN Messenger.

I was wondering if there was something I could put in his "allowed" addresses to enable him to connect.

Re: MSN Messenger blocked by AOL

This may have something to do with the requirements by the instant messaging clients that one must be 18 to sign up for an IM account. If you are 18, you are legally an adult and thus there is no reason to filter content. Sounds like it may be a legal manuver to avoid any liability to me. Any thoughts Jefferson ???

I'll Google around and see if I can turn something up.

Edited to add URL - Check here and see if this helps with the settings in MSN.

Re: MSN Messenger blocked by AOL

I don't think it is an MSN problem?

AOL is blocking whatever site Messenger logs into. He can use MSN Messenger if he connects via another ISP.

On Teen setting, AOL blocks Google, but I just added it to his allow list & it worked.
I was wondering if anyone knew which site address MSN Messenger connects to?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

It may still be MSN. Check here for information about an MSN Messenger, required upgrade that may be affecting your son's connectability.

Re: MSN Messenger blocked by AOL

    Dear Doc,

    Thanks for the help.

He has the latest version of MSN Messenger, but still cannot access it unless I change his AOL settings form Teen to Adult.

I think I need to enter whatever site MSN Messenger connects to when it starts up into his allowed sites.

The problem is finding what that address is!!!

    Thanks for your help.

    Kevin
