Recipe wanted - Butter Pie

I'm trying to find a recipe for Butter Pie which I think originates from Lancashire. I think I've eaten one once but it was described as a Potato and Butter Pie in the deli.

It was damned nice but when I mention it to anyone I get blank stares and comments like 'urgh, that sound disgusting' or 'never heard of it.'

Can anyone help, this has been bugging me for ages - years in fact

Maybe if you play Paul McCartney's song "Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey" backwards you'll hear a recipe...
"Admiral Halsey notified me/ He had to have a berth or he couldn't get to sea/ I had another look and i had a cup of tea and butter pie/ (the butter wouldn't melt so i put it in the pie)"
sorry I couldn't help more, but this is the only time I've ever heard of it...
have fun

Re: Recipe wanted - Butter Pie

I've never heard of it but I found a recipe on this webpage. I also copied and pasted the recipe here for you. Not sure if this is what you wanted but maybe it will work!!

1930 Butter Pie

Source of Recipe
copykat.com

List of Ingredients
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 heaping tablespoon butter
1 heaping tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
Unbaked pastry for a 9 inch pie

Recipe
Cream the first four ingredients together until light; add milk and mix well. Pour filling into a deep pie tin lined with unbaked pastry. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes, or until done.

This is another one I found located on this web page.

Butter Pie
Mary
Beaver Dam, Ky

* 1 cup of sugar
* 1 cup of hot water
* 1 cup of butter
* 2 Tbsp.flour
* 1 tsp. vanilla

1. Mix all ingredients until well blended
2. Pour into unbaked pie shell
3. Bake at 350 degrees until lightly brown about 30 minutes

COMMENTS: This was a recipe my grandmother and mom would make it. It doesn't take very long to prepare and it is very good!

I will be curious if either of these comes close to what you are remembering??

Skitterbug, cheers but alas the pie I ate was very much a savoury little number, with potatoes forming a large part. I think its origins have something to do with folks not eating meat on fridays or something.

My search continues ...

(Edited by skitterbug on 25-May-04 10:28. I just read back through this thread and I totally missed that you had said it had "potatoes" - duh on me!!)
A pie with potatoes in it..........now that sounds like an interesting pie. It would be more like a "meal" type rather then a "dessert". Okay, the hunt is on!! Do you remember any more of the ingredients, by chance?

I found these two at a UK site. Try this one without the fish. Or modify this savory recipe for a pie topping.

They all sound good, I'm just surprised I can't actually find an exact recipe for the real deal. If I do find out I'll let you know.

One interesting development (well, to me anyway) in my search - I'v ejust discovered a local bakers allegedly does them, they just always seem to be sold out!

Re: Recipe wanted - Butter Pie

Why not place an order to be picked up ??? Beats getting there at 5AM !!

Meanwhile, I'll keep an eye open for a recipe. It is strange that something seemingly so simple and common is nowhere to be found.

While this recipe from allrecipes.com is called White Potato Pie, it does have a good bit of butter and is served cold in a pie crust.
