Automatic link update always asks for user help (Office Prof 2003)

On my new office prof 2003 word documents with links to an excel spreadsheet, always ask if you want to update links to the remote document on opening. Despite my options being set automatically update links on opening. I have checked and unchecked and rechecked this setting does not help. Under office xp this document worked fine.
Any registry setting i need to look at for corruption or other??

One strange event - an accident. Two - a coincidence?
I'm putting this request and your other one (printing) together in my brain and thinking corrupt installation. Not that that adds much value <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>
Perhaps its time to look at Phil Rabichow's [ <!post=Systematic approach to behavioural problems in Word,197827>Systematic approach to behavioural problems in Word<!/post>

Andrew: Greetings nice to hear from you, still using and loving all that code you were kind enough to provide, You are a genius.
WRT the 'strange" behaviour I looked at Phil's systematic approach, this seems too aggressive for me to attempt a cure. Not certain I want to run the risk of killing the patient!!
I put an unrelated question about coding time zones in outlook and you may have an answer for this.

Re: Automatic link update always asks for user hel

Phil: As long as you put it that way.
I tried with winword.exe /a and on 2 inkjets it printed the left 1/2 of the page and the right 1/2 of the page lost all text. On 2 laserjets the whole page is printed. Only happens with part of a document and only with some files and also not withthe whole file. I think it has to do with the formatting or links in part of a document Also still asks if you want to update links

The steps I suggest in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#> cannot harm Word. Starting Word from the command line with the /a switch does nothing to Word; it merely starts it without add-ins, normal.dot, or any libraries.

    Hi Jerome:
I'm at a loss to explain it. If it's only happening with parts of certain documents, then I agree that it probably is due to the links or corruption. Even with the latest print drivers, it's possible that they haven't caught up with all the changes in Word 2003. Or maybe a patch will be forthcoming. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Could there be a background image, drawing, textbox, etc.? I think I've heard of a bug where some print drivers get the background in front of the text.

Re: Automatic link update always asks for user hel

I'm probably coming into this discussion a bit late in the piece, but since the problem was described as
<hr>word documents with links to an excel spreadsheet, always ask if you want to update links to the remote document on opening<hr>
I wonder whether the problem is not with Word but is with the source Excel workbook.

The reason I suggest this is that Word doesn't have a switch to ask whether to update automatic links. Sure, Word has a switch to update automatic links at open (see Tools|Options|General), but not to ask about it. Excel, on the other hand, does have a switch to ask whether to update automatic links (see Tools|Options|Edit).

Could it be that the Excel workbook being refereenced by the Word document is being opened and thus asking to update it's links?

    Cheers
