    Browser Plug-ins & Extensions (Firefox 0.8)

Well, I just installed Firefox 0.8. I'm wondering if someone who has used it for awhile could post what plug-ins they have installed & use. So far, I've installed Sort Bookmarks Extension, the Automatic Reload one, & 3 TabBrowser ones (Extensions, Manager, & Preferences). I'd like to find out what others are using & why.
    Cheers,

I recommend the following available from the mozilla extensions section

TabBrowser Extensions by Shimoda Hiroshi - I only use one tabbed browsing extension to avoid possible conflicts and this one is very comprehensive.
Google Bar by GoogleBar Team - though you can search google using the integrated search bar, this gives more options.
IE View for Windows by Paul Roub - for those occasions when you come across one of those pages that does not display properly, it allows you to easily view the page in IE.
Mycroft by Julius Ross - adds 30 popular search engines to the integrated search bar.

In addition if you use Leechget, one of the best download managers available (and free), then the Leechget extension will enable you to use it in Firefox

    Re: Browser Plug-ins & Extensions (Firefox 0.8)

    Hi Phil,

I use only two and sometimes a third extension in Firefox. The first is the TabBrowser extension, because it adds a lot of power and flexibility to the already nifty tabbed browsing. IMHO this should be a standard part of Firefox.

The second is IE View, just in case I run across a site that does not render properly in Firefox. I have found this to be quite rare but it's there if I need it.

The final extension that I use from time to time is EditCSS. As a web-developer type of person, I find this indispensable for testing and editing style sheets. If you are not into web design then its usefulness is immediately limited, of course. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

The browser does exactly what I need it to without any other extensions besides these. I am a minimalist when it comes to adding things, and everyone has different needs and wants, but I consider these three to be indispensable.

    Hi Tony & Mark:
Thanks for the information. I've downloaded & installed them. I only downloaded one TabBrowser Extension, but I have 3 of them listed. I figured they all came together. I won't download EditCSS, as I won't have a need for it, but thanks for the info.
    Cheers,

    Phil,
Here's a few more that I find helpful:
SmartSearch - highlight a word/phrase, then right click to see the word listed as a search. Your search engine opens into a separate tab with the search results. It's on the page Tony links to.

Another, I can't find it on that Firefox page, but it adds some javascript to your bookmark list.
One script removes any blocks to autocomplete for websites that won't let your password file remember the password.
The second shows any ****** password, decoded into a dialog box. For those passwords your browser remembers but you dont!

I've added these scripts to the attached txt file. Just copy each of them into a new bookmark, with the javascript in the Location field.

    I have "BlockFall" installed on mine ... for those times when browsing just isn't enough <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>.

Thanks to all of you for all the information. I will try this stuff out. Right now, I'm finding some problems loading my Personal Control Panel in the Lounge using Firefox. It can take up to a minute. But Firefox does use less resources than Avant Browser, which is what I had been using. Time will tell. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Browser Plug-ins & Extensions (Firefox 0.8)

    Hi Phil,

Just wanted to add two more extensions that I really like to use to the "list"!! Popup Alt Attribute and Dictionary Search which are both listed on this website. I use the first one because I like being able to see what the "Smilies" might be "saying" and the second one because spelling is a real struggle for me so a dictionary is a must. And even then, I still make mistakes!! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> The second reason for the use of this dictionary is that sometimes I really don't know what the definition of a word that has been used could be, so I look it up! This happens quite often with words used in posts by the 'famous' JohnGray!! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    I use Firefox .8 now but I really think that my Moz Firebird .7 loaded faster. I won't use IE unless I absolutely have to. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Thanks for this. I notice that Firefox 0.8 loads slower, too. I also have trouble loading the Lounge. I've had it time out several times. I turned off Zone Alarm & it seemed to speed up a bit. I'll experiment. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Browser Plug-ins & Extensions (Firefox 0.8)

    Hi Phil,

I have not experienced any problems with entering the Lounge. I have my link "bookmarked" in the Toolbar folder for handy access.

Usually, I start my browser with an HTML home page that I created and have stored on my computer with various favorite links listed on it! Then I can either click on one of those or head straight for the Lounge. Two guesses as to the direction I head first?? <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> I really enjoy "surfing" the threads in the Lounge with the tabbed pages! <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>

    Good luck in solving your problem! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: Browser Plug-ins & Extensions (Firefox 0.8)

Like Skitterbug I have not had a problem with the Lounge using Firefox. I wonder if it could be related to your profile in the browser? Often the recommendation for fixing problems in Firefox is to create a new user profile and see if it persists.

When you say it loads slower, do you mean the application's startup time is slower? I rarely close the browser, so I have not paid attention to this. Firefox is usually open with a few tabs, and I always have one tab on the Lounge. In fact, now that I've said that I think the only time I don't have the browser open is when I install new software or the computer has just finished a reboot. Conversely, I have noticed that it seems to take a moment or two longer to close open browser windows, but I attribute that to its 0.8 version. On other machines I do not see the same problem.

    Re: Browser Plug-ins & Extensions (Firefox 0.8)

    Hi Mark:
Yes, the applications startup time is slower. I have it set to open to a blank page. Then I use a button on the toolbar to go to my Control Panel in the Lounge. I don't know what the cause is & it didn't happen when I first set it up. Once I'm in the Lounge, when I click a link, the pages load about as fast as Avant Browser, which is what I had been using. Firefox uses far less resources, however. I don't leave a lot running at the same time as I have Win98 SE, & it seems to balk when too much is running. (I know, I know, I should have switched to XP long ago. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>)

I'm going to play around with Zone Alarm & see if it makes a difference. If that doesn't change things, I'll try deleting my profile (after I write down all the choices that I've made <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>).

    Thanks for the help.
