IE Freezes at Windows Update site

I am helping a friend who has WIN 98 SE. Whenever I go to Microsoft's Windows Update site, the system freezes - totally. Even Ctrl,ALT,Del do not work. I have to restart the system. I have reinstalled Windows over itself. I have repaired IE. I have run SFC. I have run virus scan. I have run Pest Patrol. Otherwise, Internet Explorer seems to work OK. Any suggestions short of reformatting and reloading?

What pop up and under blockers do you have running?

Also do you have a script blocker running?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

No popup blockers at all. Only script blocking is with Norton Antivirus 2003.

Might try turning off Script Blocking on Norton long enough to try it and see.

I disabled the script blocking feature in NAV and then went to the Microsoft Windows Update site. No luck. It starts to load and then freezes the entire system. As I said earlier, Ctrl, alt and del do not work. I have to restart the system. Strange.

A complete system hang like that is usually not a good sign. Have you dumped the browser cache and removed all ActiveX controls?
