Do you have a proxy server? A firewall? Have you emptied your Temporary Internet Files? Deleted History?

Joe, thanks. Yes, I use a proxy server and a firewall, but I empty my Temporary Internet Files every day. My problem is that I can browse a few pages, then the IE hangs. But if I close it, and restart IE, it's ok .... until after a dozen or so pages .... then I have close it and start again ...

Have you checked the size of your TIF?
IE options>general>TIF settings. If you have a decent size HD you can open up the size of the TIF and try it out.

Could it be a proxy timeout setting? What proxy server are you using?

Just a thought: do you have an up-to-date Java Runtime Engine (aka Java Virtual Machine)? It takes a good amount of time for the JRE to fire up when you visit a page with an embedded Java applet, and the browser will seem to hang during that time. Then, if you have Sun's JRE, a coffee cup usually will appear on the system tray and the browser will come back to life.

Re: Hung Explorer After A Few Pages (IE 6)

An addendum to Jscher's good points. Sun's Java gives you the option of showing that coffeecup or not. Also, in some installations, Sun's Java and the MS one can both still be
around (as seen in Tools / Internet Options / Advanced), which is probably a mistake (and in that case one should uncheck the MS ones -- that cured some related trouble I was having).
Finally, the MS Java, AKA Virtual Machine, will be discontinued anyway this Autumn, as one result of MS losing that legal contest with Sun, so that might be another reason
    to consider switching.

Actually, MS and Sun recently reached an agreement whereby MS can continue to support the MSJVM until the end of 2007 (see this article ). But I agree that it's probably a good idea to switch.
