Re: chkdsk (XPP SP1)

This can happen if the "dirty bit" is set on one or more volumes (partitions/drive letters) from an improper shutdown. From the following MS page:

The dirty bit can be set because the volume is online and has outstanding changes, because changes were made to the volume and the computer shutdown before the changes were committed to disk, or because corruption was detected on the volume.

    Hope that helps,

    Mark,

Yes it did help if I understand correctly. Are you saying that Diskkeeper found a bad bit and gave a somehow gave the command to run CHKDSK?

Perhaps not Diskeeper, per se, but maybe because of Diskeeper the operating system found a problem and set the dirty bit. This is one of the great benefits of a journaling file system like NTFS: it protects your data integrity -- even if sometimes it leaves you scratching your head as to why Windows behaves the way it does.

I seem to remember reading (or even experiencing!) the fact that Diskeeper would schedule a CHKDSK if it thought one was needed...!

    Thanks Mark.

I must be losing it because I didn't see your reply before when I replied to John. Don't know how the heck I missed it but thanks because that does clear up the mystery. I guess my assumption in my reply to John was really off base.

    hlewton,
Looking at your reply to John, it also seems that you are repeating yourself?

    Viking33,

Sorry about that, I don't know what I did there. I think I corrected it. Thanks for pointing it out.
