It is a global setting, not a workbook setting. It is dependent on the first workbook you open. If you open a workbook that has manual calc first, then manual calc will be set until it is changed. If you open a workbook with with auto calc on then it will be auto until changed.

    If you want to ensure auto mode, add this routine to your personal.xls file:

Private Sub Workbook_Open()
    Application.Calculation = xlCalculationAutomatic
    End Sub

    Steve: If it "is a global setting, not a workbook setting," then how can you open a workbook with it set?

    I guess it is poor choice of words? It is saved with the workbook, but it is set for an excel session not just the workbook.

    Open a workbook that was saved with it manual and if you open this file first the session is manual, even if all the other files are auto.

    Open a workbook that was saved with it auto and if you open this file first the session is auto, even if all the other files are manual.

    Changing to a different workbook does not change the setting. Even closing the workbook will not change the setting
