    POW

Is this the forum to ask a question about a pop up blocker?

    Yes, what's your question?

    What's the chance one of the moderators will now say no? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    I don't know Dave, but that tag line of Tony's looks suspiciously "spicy" to me. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    Re: POW

    I love this place. Always puts a smile on my face <img src=/S/blackteeth.gif border=0 alt=blackteeth width=20 height=20>

I am using POW as my blocker. It works on all pop ups that I have in my list.
You are supposed to be able to click EDIT, type in (eg) msn* and all popups beginning with msn would be blocked.

Problem is, once I type it in, I can't close the Dialog box. There is no mechanism to close it ! I'm at work now, so I'm not sure of the version, but everything else seems to work OK.

Can anyone tell me if I am using this feature correctly? Is this a known bug?

    Thank you very much !

Nope - but pressing escape gets rid of the dialog box, but doesn't save the info. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

Actually, it is the "Custom Type" function I am using.

    This is POW version 1.58

    Thanks again !!

    Re: POW

Some applications are very sloppy. Is it possible to drag the edges of the dialog box to enlarge it? Maybe there are OK/Cancel buttons below what's initially visible.

    Re: POW

I believe the description of the little dialog box is 'modal'?
You can't drag edges, and if you try clicking anything outside of it, it 'beeps'.
You have to hit Esc to be able to do anything else.

I sent them an email, but they seem to be pretty big - plus it is a free app so there really isn't
    much support.

Again - Thank you for trying !

    Re: POW

    Try pressing Enter.

Or, maybe you have a demo copy that won't let you save changes.

    Re: POW

Enter does the same as Esc.
(It is actually the Edit function I'm looking to use !!)
Here is the section from the Readme.txt regarding Edit:

    The 'Edit' option is used to expand the string matching capabilities of POW;
for example, say a popup does something like, oh, put a date at the end.
Normally this would foul things up, but now you can tell it to make partial
matches; so if it's title was "Lame Banner Ad 01/01/1999", you would add it like
normal, but then select it and choose Edit; then, remove the date, and in it's
place put a single '*' asterisk; so it now becomes "Lame Banner Ad *", and it
will automatically close anything that begins with that text... You can also
put the asterisk at the beginning or the middle of the title; but you can only
have ONE asterisk per entry, so don't put any extra.

But it doesn't save it !!

Well, I am going to try emailing them again and see if there is an updated version.

If anyone's interesed, I'll keep you posted!!

If I don't get it working, I may just try another pop up blocker !!

Have a good weekend all !!

    Re: POW

I've tried all sorts of popup stoppers and have finished up using the Google toolbar on all my computers. It's free and very very handy but, afaik, works only in IE5.5 and higher. Click on the picture below to get to it.

    Re: POW

Although I'm a creature of habit, and resist change, POW hasn't been updated for 3 years, maybe
it's time for google. I love their search engine, so I'm sure I'll like their toolbar.

    Thanks!!

I had POW...but at one time it just stopped functioning properly...in the end, I uninstalled it and got NoAds http://www.southbaypc.com/NoAds...and have been very satisfied with it.

    Re: POW

If you really want to be free of popups and have the best browser around take Mozilla for a test browse. I'm still using version 1.4 and there is nothing I do not like about it. It coexists with IE nicely and inherently blocks most all popup ads (at least any that I've run across) without having yet ANOTHER application running!
