System Information Problem (XP SP1)

I noticed a strange thing regarding the System Information ( msinfo32.exe ) display.

If I go to Start>programs>accesories>system tools and click on "system information", I get the full "Help & Support" menu displayed just as if I clicked on start> help and support, instead of the expected System Information screen with the details of my system on it.

Yet, If I right click "My Computer" and click System Information, the proper screen comes up FINE. So it isn't that msinfo32 is not working at all, it's just from the start menu OR if I type it in from the "run" line, that the wrong thing comes up.
I double checked this by going to the file itself in Explorer>program files>common files>microsoft shared>msinfo. wrong screen comes up.

I extracted the msinfo32.exe file from my XP CD and replaced all instances of that file. ( same bad results ) BUT STILL OK FROM MY COMPUTER !!

I searched the MSKBs for anything but nothing similar there. Googled around and saw a few suggestions but nothing like my problem.

Any ideas out there?

Not sure about the wrong thing from the "run" command, but from system tools, what is the target for the shortut? It should be "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedMSInfomsinfo32.exe".

Hi Bob,

I just tried running the same processes you did and was able to get the desired results. That is, going to Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information gave me the display attached to this message. I then closed SI and went to the Start | Run menu and entered msinfo32 and got the same results. If I right click on My Computer and select System Information I get Norton's version because the NSW 2004 takes over at that level.

This is all with Windows XP Pro. I cannot replicate your observations.

Cheers, Bob
Regards,
Bob

John,
The target is correct and running from "run" should access the same point.

Bob,
Yes, you are right about the RC on My Computer being Nortons System Information, not MS.

So it appears that msinfo.exe itself is blown across the board. Must be calling up another routine that isn't working correctly, since I replaced all instances of the file with copies from my CD.

What about if you Set a Restore point and re-installed msinfo32 via in INF file?

Must be time for a complete clean re-install!!! Betcha that will rectify the problem... assuming you have a couple of days to spare!!! .

Won't sign off with my usual Cheers as that glitch ain't deserving of such...

Bob,
Kelly Theriot has an extensive list of things about msinfo. Nothing seems specific to your problem but with computers you never know.

Hi Joe,

I did check out a few of the suggestions at Kelly's, but none produced any changes. I could swear that there was a reference to this, either here in the Lounge or another XP site but I just can't remember exactly where. A search here didn't bring up anythting positve though.

Bob,
No, it's not clean install time just yet.
This is an annoyance but not serious enough to warrant the "big eraser" now. If there were other nagging problems maybe yes but this is the only thing that's not right that I can see. I'll just keep plugging away at it for now and hope that some solution can be found.

Bob,
I saw a thread in the MS XP general newsgroup that was exactly the same as yours. The fellow finally resolved it by doing a repair install. He said he tried the various suggestions that Kelly had made about registry keys and nothing fixed it.

Hi Bob,

Another shot in the dark... did you try looking in the registry for msinfo32. I searched my registry for msino32.exe and found something in the Shell Open command area. Attached is a snapshot of my environment and the command in the shell operation.

Cheers, Bob

Do you still have this index.dat file?

C:WINDOWSPCHEALTHHELPCTROfflineCacheindex.dat

msinfo32.exe needs it.
