An error occurred while opening 'This Document' (Word 2002)

Hello. I have many documents which bring up this error when I try to open them. Other documents do not encounter this error. If I choose Yes, Word crashes, if I choose No, the document opens, but I can't save or print it. Other users can open this document without error. I suspect it is somehow related to macros, I have Acrobat 6.0 Professional, which adds macros to Word. If I kill Acrobat, the error doesn't happen, but I need Acrobat with these documents! Any help will be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Lounge. Since you've partially isolated the problem, you should see if there is something in particular about Acrobat that is causing the crash...perhaps a template in the startup folder that you don't really need. Try the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#> & see if that helps.
    Cheers,

Does it make any difference how you open the document? For example, if you use File>Open from inside Word, does that work any better than double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer (or launching the document from an e-mail message)?

No difference how I open - one solution I previously tried was to use the Insert > File (or Object) which sort of worked - but all formatting was lost!

    Thanks...

Re: An error occurred while opening 'This Document

Hi Phil, thanks for your reply. The post you referred me to was very helpful, and allowed me to prove what I have suspected: the pdfmaker.dot template which was located in C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10Startup is the culprit. What I now need to work out is what it is about the individual documents that causes the error, when the pdfmaker.dot template is active in Word. There must be something! Last time I had correspondence from Adobe, Leo told me: "...We have tried opening the Word document and it comes up with a Microsoft Visual Basic error that says "An error occurred while loading 'ThisDocument'. Do you want to continue loading the project? If I press Yes, I can open the project fine. Is this the same as what you encounter?

"We would also like to know if there was some special macro used to create the Word document because if there are, it may be conflicting with the PDFMaker macros.

"We suggest you try to look for a file called Normal.dot which is usually found under the Microsoft Office/Templates folder and rename it to Normal.old.

"We also suggest you try contacting Microsoft for possible known issues over their end."

I don't know which macros were used to create these problem documents - is there a way to find what the conflict is? If I open the document I'm working with today after moving the pdfmaker.dot template away from the startup folder, there are no unusual macros present, just the one I created to resize images. (This macro is always present, so I can't see that it is to blame, and I had this error before I created this macro anyway).

Any ideas? I really appreciate your assistance.

Do any of the documents which cause this problem have an AutoOpen macro? Are there macros within these documents that you are having problems with? At this point, I don't know why some documents would cause problems, but not others. If you open a blank document & insert the contents (Insert/File...), do you get the problem with the new document? (This is one way to deal with corruption in documents.)

Try disabling the Acrobat add-in temporarily so you can open the file. To do this...
    1. Open Word
    2. Under Tools > Templates and Addins untick the PDFmaker addin
    3. Open one of the problem files
    4. Go back to Tools > Templates and Addins and tick the PDFmaker addin once again.

    Did this avoid the error?

Re: An error occurred while opening 'This Document

I have used the instructions on the post you recommended to check for add ins and com add ins, and there is no AutoOpen macro. Using the Insert > File method does work, a whole wad of formatting is wrecked. Does this indicate the area of the document that is damaged?

    Thanks again.

Re: An error occurred while opening 'This Document

Hi Andrew, Phil (from the Lounge) has helped me confirm my suspicion - it is the pdfmaker.dot template that Acrobat placed in the startup folder for Office that is the culprit. Using your instructions, the error still occurs, which is interesting. This removes the Acrobat Toolbars, but I suspect because Word is still open, the conflicting template is still active somehow. Too technical for me! Using the Insert > File method gets around the error, and allows me to "clean" the file, but much formatting is lost. I'd really like to know what is wrong with these suspect documents!

    Thanks...

Re: An error occurred while opening 'This Document

When you use Insert/File, you essentially have selected, copied, & pasted the document into a new document without including the final paragraph mark of the old file. This often indicates that there was corruption in the original file. The reason that you lose formatting (sometimes) is that the blank document has already used some of the same styles as the old document. Try this.
    1. Open a blank document & open the problematic document.
    2. With the new document active, go to Tools/Templates & add-ins/Organizer. You will see the a dialog box that lists the new document & normal.dot.
    3. Close normal.dot (in the dialog box) & navigate to your problematic document.
    4. Click on the Styles tab & copy the styels from the problem document to the new document (let's hope the styles weren't corrupt). Copy the styles 3 times (there are reasons, but let's not complicate this too much).
    5. Now, in the blank document, go to Insert/File & insert your problem file. You should not lose any formatting this time.

This is a procedure that helps with corrupt documents. However, I am suspicous that you would have so many corrupt documents, so I still think it has something to do with the PDF template.

Re: An error occurred while opening 'This Document

Hi Phil. Thanks again for your assistance - it took me a little while to find time to follow your advice! When I copied the styles (in point 4. of your recent post), I highlighted them all and copied them in one go, three times as suggested. I didn't close the dialogue box between the closes, just pressed copy, three times in a row. Is this what you meant? Because the format corruption still occurred, but just in one part of the document (the start).

Regarding your suspicion over the PDF template, I have no problems with documents that I create, or that others create from scratch. The issues are with older documents which are modified with current data.

    Thanks again, Justin

    Hi Justin:
Yes, that's what I meant. If you still have corruption in part of the document, try copying parts of the document to a new blank document. Save the new document, as long as there's no corruption. If there is, then don't save it & copy a smaller part until you get a new document without corruption. I know, it's a PITA. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
