Ping and Log Software

Hi there, I am looking for some shareware/freeware program that will go out and ping a specific address at designated intervals and record the results in a txt file. We are having difficulty with our mail server and are looking for a utility to do some testing. Anyone hear of something similar?

Re: Ping and Log Software

You can do this with a BATch file , running in a Command Prompt window.

To do exactly what you want takes only this very short BATch file (say PINGER.BAT):

:: PINGER.BAT
:loop
PING -n 1 servername >> LOGFILE.TXT
:: next PING equivalent to SLEEP command
PING -n 120 127.0.0.1 > NUL
goto loop

Insert the "servername" you want to PING, by name or by IP address. The "120" means "do nothing" for (almost) 120 seconds; put whatever number you like here! This file runs 'permanently' until forcibly terminated.

If what you REALLY want to do is to send a message to one or more userids or one or more machines if the main PING should return a Timeout, add timestamps, etc, then ask again.

There is also some software called Servers Alive which years ago used to be free, but doesn't seem to be free any more (on a quick glance). It may be overkill for what you want to do, but it's certainly more thorough...

Thank you! I'll try the Batch file first...

That Servers Alive product looks pretty cool too - looks like it just about can drive over, knock at your door and call your Mother if you get an error!

That reminds me of a problem we had for a while with the configuration of our monitoring software. When the mail server went down, it was supposed to send an e-mail using (you guessed it) the down server. Well, you can't get it right all the time.
