    Rename network locations (XP Pro)

In Explorer my mapped network locations have those long address names. When I right click one, there is a Rename menu item and, under Properties, a General tab that says "New Volume" for each one. My question: I don't (and hopefully couldn't) screw up the network naming of everything, but I'd like my Explorer to show a more practical name when I look at it, such as "June Reports" for that mapped loction for the June reports out on the network. Am I supposed to use the General Tab's "new volume" area to create my nickname for the folder? Or can't I do this at all? TYIA

To sidestep your question, I think Network Places were designed to solve the problem of wanting to have friendly shortcuts to network resources (particularly when they are not top level shares). Can you use Network Places instead?
