Congratulations! I did vote, but it doesn't seem to have any effect (the number of votes remains the same)

It might take a while before the votes get updated on the site.

It would seem so - just to keep a count, it was registering two before I voted at the link you provide - when did the file go up? and judging from the screenshot when i tryed to climb back up the heirarchy, there's definately something odd about that part of the site!!!

Re: Name Manager on Office Market place (97, 2000,

That problem appears to be related to what country Microsoft thinks you are in.

When I browse the Microsoft Office site using Internet Explorer it correctly shows me as being in the UK. If I then try to navigate to the page showing the name manager it tells me that there are no files in that section. When I use Firefox, the Microsoft Office site shows me as being in the US and it finds 27 files including the name manager.

In IE6, you can specify which languaged the browser uses: Tools | Options..., General tab, Languages... button. I have set mine to US English, so I see all 27 items. It also makes some things available that the Dutch version lacks (such as a choice of search options)

But I imagine that a UK citizen would dislike setting the browser to use US English as preference.

Oh, yes. That I forgot. You do need to look at the US version. On the site somewhere there is a link called "Office worldwide" (somewhere near the bottom of the page). Click that and you can choose between all available local versions of Office online. Choose the US one and then Marketplace. Then select "Analysis tools", Power tools. Mine is on page 2 of the listing.

Re: Name Manager on Office Market place (97, 2000,

I've downloaded the Name Manager, and it looks to be very helpful. Thanks for providing it. I expect I'll be using it heavily in the future.

One thought for the next version: It would be nice to have a Change capability that would let you change a Name and then have all references to it in the spreadsheet changed as well.

Which brings up a basic question I have about using Names. I've got some spreadsheets in which I am converting certain cell references to references to Names. I.e., I've created a Name that refers to a range, and I want to find all occurrences of formulas that refer to that range and, depending on circumstances, replace those references with references to the Name I've created. E.g., in ='Worksheet1!A1*G1 and all other similar formulas in a given row (or, I suppose, column), I would like to change the references to Worksheet1!?1*?1 to Name1*?1.

Using Insert|Name|Apply, which I thought might do it, just gets me the error message: "Microsoft Office Excel cannot find any references to replace". I can see some complexities here, involving whether changes should be made to range references that are absolute, relative, row absolute, column absolute or some combination of these.

Am I missing something basic? If I'm not, is there a tool available for this?

Not any more. It has jumped to number 1 in the ratings for that catagory.

Re: Name Manager on Office Market place (97, 2000,

    Hi,

The change functionality is a tough one to implement. I have been postponing that for over a year now <g>.

AFAIK the Insert, name, apply option *should* do the other chore though. But I've never used it seriously enough to tell how reliable it is. Maybe you had more than a single cell selected when you started the method, so Excel just searched the selection?

I know one tool that enables the renaming of a name, it is called NameEdit by a chap that calls himself KeepITCool. Do a Google and you should be able to find him.
It is a klone of my name manager, but it is less stable in circumventing all of Excel's glitches regarding the Name Object.
