    Pentium Upgrade

I am currently running Win XP Home with a Pentium III, 602 Mhz. Have 512 Mb Ram and 40 Gig harddrives on removable bays. I would like to buy and install a HP DC4000 Moviemaker(Movie Writer). It calls for a Pentium III 1.2 Gig. If I go for the faster Pentium will I have to reload EVERYTHING I have in the computer? Any information and directions would be most appreciated as well as any comments on the DC4000. Thanx mucho

How are you planning to upgrade - a new computer or just a new motherboard?

If you get the faster Pentium, you will certainly need a new motherboard as well. If that is the only thing that you change, Windows should not have any problems picking up and moving forward. Windows XP is pretty good about accepting a massive change like a motherboard. The Pentium itself...well, no issues, it's the same set of computing instructions on the processor, just faster.

Also, if it's a new MB, see if you can determine just what MB is currently installed and check with the manufacturer's website to determine:

1.Will the MB handle a 1.2 gig P3 CPU? Some can stretch a bit to handle the new chip.
2.If you have to get a new MB, find out if it takes the same type of memory sticks. If not then you also need new memory.
    3. HDs shouldn't be a problem.
    4. As Mark said, XP should be fine on the install. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!
