What do you hope to accomplish with a binary file whose structure you don't know? <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

This file contains data gathered with an instament control app. I am using Excel to chart the data points.

Perhaps the manufacturer of the instrument or the instrument control application provide information about the structure of the file, or even an interface. I don't think you can do much if you don't know the structure of the file.

If you don't know the file structure, how are you going to find the data in the file? Either you will have to know the file structure so you can parse the data, or you will have to open the file using a program that knows the structure.

Have a good look through the application help and menus to see if there's an export option; the capability to export to a text file (structured, such as CSV, or unstructured), a DIF file, or an Excel 5 file is pretty common even in specialist apps.

Have you opened your binary data file with Notepad? If you can see the data you want, as opposed to the usual binary style garbage, you might be able to parse it with Excel's automatic file import dialogs. If all you see is ^2^#⌠>^@^@ kind of stuff you'll need to work with the data application's export or report features.

Usually such apps have a fairly good internal structure anyway. Notepad may work well, alternatively,
I'd recommend looking at it via a free third-party hexadecimal viewer such as HexEdit.
If you can work out the structure, then reading it via Excel is relatively easy in VBA.
