Multiple mailboxes in OE (XP Pro SP 1)

On my new computer, to help deal with the spam problem, I want to set up multiple mailboxes in Outlook Express (from one provider / internet connection). Is this as easy as it sounds, i.e., will there be a separate in-box screen for each mailbox?

Will these multiple mailboxes be for different people with their email address or just you using different email addresses?
Each address will be subject to spam.

I was thinking of one for my wife (different machine) and two or three for myself, hoping that if I confine my Internet shopping to one address, the others will have (relatively) little spam.

Having separate mailboxes will NOT reduce the spam. All one needs to do is use a free "Internet" ( Hotmail, yahoo and etc) for the Internet shopping. and your prime may not get as much. I do not use Outlook or OE to get ANY Internet email, if I want it in Outlook I will use a pop3 address.

Remember that the biggest source of spam is from your friends and all those "jokes" that get passed around with lord knows how many addresses at the top, each worth up to a $ US each.

May I jump in with a possible suggestion? From the gist of some of your other recent posts, I gather that you've been a Netscape user. I don't use Outlook or Outlook Express, so I can't answer your question of how either would handle multiple mail addresses. Why don't you stick with either a recent version of Netscape, or better yet, switch to Mozilla. Either choice would be better than Netscape 4.7. One other tool you should (could) consider is Mailwasher Pro from Firetrust. It acts as a "front-end" to help you monitor your email while it's still on the ISP's server - i.e. the mail hasn't been downloaded to your PC yet. You can setup multiple email addresses in Mailwasher and either check them automatically or manually, at your discretion. When you've deleted or "bounced" the messages you don't want, you simply switch to your email software and "receive" the remaining good messages. Mailwasher can also be "trained" to help watch for spam and mark it for deletion and/or bouncing.

In my case, I use Mailwasher as a front-end for Mozilla mail, in which I have several email "accounts" setup. If your ISP allows multiple email names, do it. But be sure they will let you DELETE an email address later. Here's why I suggest that. My "primary" email name is with my ISP, but since I also have a web domain name, my web host allows me to setup multiple email addresses at my own domain. I create one there for "throw away" purposes and at the end of some period of time, or if the spam starts getting through to that address, I delete it and create a different one for shopping and such. As Dave said, the spammers will eventually find MOST addresses, somehow, so it's nice to be able to delete one when that happens.

Re: Multiple mailboxes in OE (XP Pro SP 1)

From re-reading your post it looks like you want to have a number of email accounts available for use, so that your wife can use one from another machine, and you can use one for most of your mail and another to use when registering at internet shopping sites.

Although you'll need to set up different accounts on OE to read these accounts, the main part of this question is concerned with setting up more than one account with your ISP.

My first ISP claimed to offer multiple email addresses, such that I could have owen@myname.myISP.com , nemo@myname.myisp.com etc, but downloading them from the mail server brought ALL the messages. If I only used the one machine I could have used rules to sort owen@ . . . into one folder and nemo@ . . . into another, but you want your wife to be able to receive hers on one machine and yours on another.

I have moved to another free ISP that does give proper separation of accounts.

My advice would be to check on the support / advice pages at your ISPs homepage and see whether they offer what you need. Probably you'll have to use their homepages to manage the setting up of the new accounts, so make a note of the details of the username and passwords you are given. Often you end up with a page showing the settings that you can use to print off as a permanent record.

Then it's straightforward to open OE, go to Tools / Accounts . . . and key the details of the account and server to be able to download your mail on your machine. Fill in the details of your wife's account on her machine and you can each receive your own mail.

Hope this helps.

PS I would also thoroughly recommend Mailwasher it allows you to identify and delete spam and look out for virus infected mail BEFORE downloading anything nasty onto your machine.

Hi Dave, this is useful info, I see these forwarded joke messages on so many machines (fortunately not mine). I have noticed people using additional text in their reply addresses lately (ie: joebloggs@isp.com changed to: joebloggs@NOSPAMisp.com). This seemed like a bright idea to me, does it work? Hope you understand what I mean.

Cyberdance,
This stops the machine harvesting of the addresses, and slow down the manual method. If a address is posted it can be cleaned up. The programs that do the harvesting are learning the standards that people are using and are being dated to do the substitutions. Just like the spam filters are getting smarter, the same tricks are being used to do the harvesting.

Bottom line, get a throw away address.

Gotcha Dave, I have been using a domain based address for most stuff for a while now, seems to be the best method, you are right in that it does not take that long before it fills with junk and I dump it. Cheers and thanks.
