Importing Templates

I am now using Word 2000 (9.0.3821 SR-1). I want access to some templates I created in Word 97 SR-1. I tried dragging them from the Templates Folder in the old directory on D: to the new Templates Folder on C:. When I attempt to use File>New I do not find the templates under the General Tab.

I managed to get one moved there by opening Word 2000, opening the template from the Folder on D:, and then saving it as a template. When I tried it a second time, the template opened OK, but the 'Save As' box was greyed out.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Re: Importing Templates

The location depends on the operating system, but with 98 it is:
c:windowsapplication datamicrosofttemplates
Unfortunately they move it with every version of Office and Windoze. Copy the files there and they will appear in the file new dialog box. You can also create a subfolder and put them all in there to create a separate tab.

Not sure why the second part of the question behaved like it did, but this should help.

Re: Importing Templates

Mike,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I played some during the interim. Here is what I learned.

If I used the Start>Find>Files or Folders utility to find and open them, and saved them they went to a folder called, Windowsapplication datatemplates. This technique allowed the specification of a file name and that I wanted to save a template. The templates there all have today's date and File>New finds them. This is under Windows, a 'protected' folder. You must request permission to look in it.

I opened the old templates on D: using File>Open in the new copy of Word 2000 on C: and then saved them, they were saved in D:Program FilesMSOfficeTemplates. I could select in the Save As dialog to send them to Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeTemplates. In all cases, the 'save as type' box was greyed out. I learned this by changing the name on one template.

I also have copies of the templates in Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeTemplates. These bear the old dates. They could be there because I dragged and dropped them there or because of the first protocol I tried.

It appears that Redmond moved the templates but forgot to get rid of their old folder when they created Office 2000.

I believe you are quite right. Moving from 97 to 2000 does seem to leave quite a bit of "debris" Looks like you have everything under control now.

Re: Importing Templates

There is an error in the first paragraph! I do not want to mislead anyone.

The files are at:

Windowsapplication dataMicrosofttemplates

My post left out the "Microsoft" section.

Sorry

See: Template Basics (addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm) for more on templates (user and workgroup), document templates, global templates and Normal.dot. This also includes how the files are organized under File New and the location of template folders which varies not only by version of Word but also by operating system.
