No FTP in IE5 (IE5)

Hi all,

When trying to download some drivers, I discovered that IE5 on my computer does not connect to the wanted FTP site. I am using Zonealarm as a firewall. (I am using ADSL.)

Is there a certain flow I can/must follow to determine the problem, or is it just a setting I overlooked ?

Any hint is most welcome (as I cannot download pictures from my digital camera until I have the drivers).

Is this an FTP link directly to a file, or are you trying to navigate through folders? IE has some kind of built-in FTP navigation features, but I'm not sure how well they work. If you have a direct link to an EXE or ZIP, does it help to right-click it and Save Target?

It's a direct link to a ZIP-file. The URL is ftp://AWKeF73MF5:aBE8fC17@ftp.nikon-euro..../Win-Driver.zip

I tried the "Save target as" but that does not work either. The dialog screen doen not show any activity.

I'm getting desparate.....

Any more things I could try ?

When you attempt to down load, what happens?
You posted that it will not connect, but nothing else.

I have tried your posted ftp address and it works for me, in IE 6.

When I just click on the link on the Nikon-site, I get a new window . I know it is in Dutch, but I think you know the screen. This IE windows stays open until it gives an error. See screen print : some translation : Screen title : cannot find server; Screen itself : The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is not available ....

Hopefully this rings a bell ?

Link also works fine for me in IE6.
Have you considered upgrading to IE6?

I too am using ZoneAlarm and have sometimes have had the same trouble with FTP sites, but decreasing the security level of ZA in Internet Zone from high to medium (just while accessing the FTP site) has usually worked for me. Have you tried that?

Do you have Passive mode enabled? Tools | Internet Options | Advanced then make sure 'Use Passive FTP' is checked. Close and restart IE.
Also, have you tried using an FTP client? You could even use the built in MS client in DOS/Command line mode.

Remember the security flap about @ signs in URLs? I think there was a "fix" for that, and one of its side effects was to create problems for URLs that used this method of authentication (putting the credentials before the hostname, separated by an @ sign). Because other users report being able to access the file, I wonder whether there was a fix for the fix that came out later, and maybe you haven't installed it? Could you try Windows Update and see if there are any patches that might be relevant?

I have a dutch version of Windows 98 SE, so IE is also in dutch. Could you make a screenprint of the setting, so that I can figure out which one this is in my dutch version ?

How does this built in MS client work ? Could you show me ?

As far as the FTp client goes:
1.) Open a DOS window
2.) Type in "FTP ftp.nikon-euro.com" (without the apostrophes). Then Hit Enter.
3.) Type in AWKeF73MF5 as the userid. Hit Enter.
4.) Type in aBE8fC17 as the password. Hit Enter.
5.) Type in "CD Software/Dy4AebOVBWv2kBg" (without the apostrophes). Hit Enter.
6.) Type in LS. Hit Enter. You should see Win-Driver.zip listed.
7.) Type in Get. Hit Enter. Then follow the prompts.

As a footnote, I've had reasonable luck using batch files with the command-line FTP in Windows 2000/XP. I've only used these to upload, because I had to upload 50 files at a time. To download, you'd create a simpler file. Here's an example:

The "Use passive FTP" option is not in my IE. On the info-screen it says : 5.00.2614.3500.
Could it be that I have a slightly outdated version ? <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

The only item that refers to FTP is : "Use FTP through the web" (this my translation from the dutch text). I have tried this option ON and OFF, but it gave no difference.

I will have to give your next message a try.
