CD & DVD drive letters (XP Home - all updates)

I seem to have to rebuild my system more than I would like. I would like to always have the CD R/W and DVD R/W drives come out as D and E drives (except when I configure two hard drives (as C and D), when I would like to have them be E and F. Windows always places my unit which has four USB drives (for camera memory media) before the CD and DVD drives. It is laborious to disconnect the USB drives, reinstall Windows, reconnect them, etc. Is there a better way, either with a non-obvious install option (activated specially) or by renaming after installation (wthout losing the special drive designations that show up in Windows Explorer)?

    Thanks.

    Yes there is.

If you go into the control panel, and open up the Administrator Tools. Choose Computer Management, and in the explorer on the left go to 'Storage' - Disc Management.

This should display all connected drives in the right window. A right click on the relevant drive will allow you to change the drive letter.

Thanks, but this doesn't work for me. I have to remove my programs that reference the CD or DVD drives (Nero, e.g.). The icons are lost. Other issues arise.

I guess I may have to reinstall Windows with the USB drives unconnected, or hope that all of my programs work with CD and DVD drives way down the alphabet.

    Thats strange - you should be able to change drive letters <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Do you have to do this for the drives to work? I am not quite sure of what you mean. Sorry.

What happens if you unplug the usb drives and then reboot?

I would not reinstall XP as a solution as that sounds very drastic. What actually happens when you go into the computer managemtn and try to change the drive letters? Do you have admin rights ( i assume you do )

    cheers
    Thanks,

Renaming the drives is one of the first things I do, before installing any programs. I know this will not help you out at this time, but put it on you set of installation instructions.

I used R for the CD reader, W for the CD/DVD burner and Z for the Zip drive.

Also, why do you need to do these rebuilds so often?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: CD & DVD drive letters (XP Home - all updates)

I'll try the unplug approach tomorrow (unplug, rename CD and DVD drives, replug).

    What happens is:
    - with the USB drives, the special memory identifier icon in Windows Explorer is lost, and I do not find these under the usual list of icons to use. However, I am even more concerned that the special actions with these four USB "drives" may lost their special identity, especially if I try to use them to erase data on the memory devices (compact flash, memory stick, etc; I burned up a compact flash card on Christmas day trying this).
    - with the CD/DVD drives, I get an error message and abort if I try to change them UNLESS I first remove the Nero starter software that is a part of the system install. I am directed to upgrade the Nero software, but Nero just hangs unless I pay for the full version of the program, i.e., what is shipped with the PC is useless. If I remove this software, I can change the drive letter but the icon and ID is incorrect.

    I do have admin rights.

Re: CD & DVD drive letters (XP Home - all updates)

I take it that you either do not have a USB multimedia interface unit or you disconnect it before installing Win XP.

My first high-powered PC (purchased last October) required many rebuilds, and the hard drive, mother board, and video board all failed along the way. Installation of new software was still marginal. Gateway replaced the unit. The replacement has worked well until about 3-4 weeks ago. I had the PC set to do an incremental backup (to a 120 GB Iomega external drive) every morning at 3:00 am. Also, on Thursday morning at 5:30 I have Norton do a full system scan, since there is at least a weekly virus definition file update every Wednesday evening. When I checked the system Thursday morning, it was unable to back up a few of my recently changed files. I used the PC, but found several system files corrupted. Upon reboot, Win XP automatically started chkdsk, which spent over an hour messing up hundreds of files, leading to my rebuild on this system.

Re: CD & DVD drive letters (XP Home - all updates)

When I build or rebuild I remove ALL external devices and add them on one by one. It is the safe way in doing it.

Sounds like you heading for another hard drive problem.

Re: CD & DVD drive letters (XP Home - all updates)

You're right -- that is the best approach. Not having done a rebuild for a few months, I forgot to do this. It is somewhat tricky, as I have to go into the case and disable the multimedia unit. [In other words, "external" includes internally mounted special "drives" such as the multimedia unit.] Frankly, Windows should provide the appropriate options during the Windows install process. It is another sign of the thoughtlessness of the MS developers.

Re: CD & DVD drive letters (XP Home - all updates)

Unplug approach didn't work. I decided to leave the DVD and CD drives as H and I and hope that things work well.

I replaced my Norton 2003 (with 3 months left to run on its subscription) with 2004 professional today (on another PC from the earlier subject). Still have the IE problem: an "Action canceled" window slides into view and cannot be removed without rebooting the system. Ugh!
