Find and Replace (Word 2000, SP3)

While in a Word document I go to use the find and replace and the background of the document becomes grey so I can't see the words it finds.

This could be a Windows setting. Try this: arrange two Word document windows side by side and click one title bar and then the other. If the gray background always appears on the "inactive" window, then try changing your colors in Windows' Display control panel. If you need more help doing that, please reply with your version of Windows. If you do it and it doesn't work, well... hopefully someone else has an idea.

It could also well be a problem with your graphic card driver. Especially if you have software for multi-monitor support, Word will run into problems with the Find/Replace dialogue and some others.

In case you use ATI's Hydravision, try to kill desk95.exe from the task manager, and see if that fixes the problem.

BTW, Word2002/2003 also have those problems, so updating won't help in this case.
