Norton TMP Folders

I am running Windows 98SE and Norton AntiVirus 2003. In C:/ProgramFiles/Common files/Symantec Shared/VirusDefs there are several folders labelled tmpXXXX.TMP. What are these and can they be safely deleted? What other files and folders in here are just accumulating and can be safely deleted?

    Re: Norton TMP Folders

Typically, things with a TMP extension can be safely removed. A better course of action would be for you to move them to a temporary location of your choosing, say
C:delete_at_month_end
and if no problems arise, you can then send them to the recycle bin.

In regards to what other files and folders are there that can safely be deleted...there are a lot of software tools on the market that will scour your hard drive for temporary and orphaned files and remove them for you. I cannot make a recommendation as I tend to do most of my housecleaning manually, but try searching the Lounge forums for items like this if you are interested.

    Re: Norton TMP Folders

My interpretation of "tmp" files is just that....temporary. Unless they were just created that same day, I would delete them.

As to Mark's suggestion of utilities to clean up the debris, I have always been a big fan of "System Mechanic" I have developed such a trust in it, that I just delete all that it finds without a second thought. Lots of good features in it.
