Restoring (permanently) deleted messages (2000 & XP)

A friend called me last night to ask if there was any way to retrieve emails that had been deleted AND removed from 'Deleted Items'. Now, I know there is in 98 (Select 'Deleted Items' folder, then click Tools, Recover Deleted Items) so I said I was sure there is and set about trying to find it. He uses Outlook 2000 and I use XP.

After fruitlessly hunting around for several minutes I gave up and looked it up in the Help (gasp!). Sure enough, XP (and 2000, when I talked him through looking for it - he's not all that au fait with Outlook) stated it was exactly the same procedure - select the 'Deleted Items' folder, then click on Tools, Recover Deleted Items.

    But it wasn't there! On either of our machines! <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

Is this some weird glitch? Did Microsoft change their minds and remove the facility? Or are we both going mad?!

I would really appreciate any suggestions!

This MSKB article suggests that this can only be done with an Exchange account and then only if the retention time specified by the server administrator has not elapsed.

There's a bit more explanation on Rebel's information in my old post <!post=here,324767>here<!/post>; if you aren't on Exchange Server you are not going to be able to recover permanently deleted items unless you have some other 3rd party tool installed, or the items are misfiled rather than deleted, including the occasional error of dragging items into Outlook Today, see <post#=317064>post 317064</post#>.

I see - yes, thanks, John (and Rebel). Pity!

John, you mention a third party tool - do you know of any, by any chance, or was that just a suggestion?
