    wmp 9 no sounds (9.00.00.3128)

Having a problem with wmp 9 not producing any sound. System is xp home intel 2.8, 512 ram with dvd rom and dvd rw both sony, Sound is realtek ac97. The sound problem has only recently started as previously worked ok .Unable to get any sound when playing audio cd from either drive with digital on or off. Have downloaded MusicMatch Jukebox to test the system and everything works fine. So the problems appears to be with wmp. Any suggestions / help would be appreciated.

Naive questions: have you checked all the volume settings?
    - Open the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties control panel; there will be a slider for overall volume and an Advanced button or something like that to set the volume for individual components. Make sure that the volume for CD player is up, and that Mute has not been ticked. You can also select Start | Accessories | Entertainment | Volume Control to get here.
    - WMP has its own volume slider. Make sure that it is set correctly, and that WMP's Mute button hasn't been set.

Have checked your suggestions and all are ok and functioning as they should. Have noticed when trying to play cd via wmp9 play button that it sends the command to the cd player which spins for a fraction of a second before the stop button activates then nothing happens. With the tracks all displayed on the right of media player and play selected it scrolls continuously through tracks without stopping.

Cheched out the troubleshooting again and everything works ok except the cd player under wmp9, it works fine under Musicmatch. Noticed that when open on file menu is clicked the only time you see any information on the contents of cd drive is when the "any file" option is selected all other options find nothing in the drive and I know the drive is function ok because it auto playds in musicmatch.

In WMP if you go to Tools | Options | Devices then select Speakers is the 'Use 24 bit audio ..." box checked or unchecked?

    Glen,
Did you change anything on the system since it last worked with WMP? Install any new hardware or software (other than Musicmatch)? Also, can you play other files with WMP - such as local .MID or .WAV?

Re: wmp 9 no sounds (9.00.00.3128)

Yes new software has been installed - windows updates which I seem to remember had a media player update that encountered a problem on installation saying it could not find the file it was looking to update/ replace. The message disappeared from the screen before I had a chance to note the problem. The only other software was WMP bonus pack for XP and no hardware updates at all. In trying to play midi or wav files (no sound heard) the following message come up (underneath/below what you currently donig)
Windows Media Player Error Message Help

Re: wmp 9 no sounds (9.00.00.3128)

Have you tried a system restoreback to a time when you are sure the player worked? Can you uninstall the WMP bonus pack? Then uninstall any patches for WMP? Then uninstall WMP itself? Then re-install the player and patches. Then the WMP bonus pack.

Re: wmp 9 no sounds (9.00.00.3128)

System restore did not change circumstance. Followed the uninstall / reinstall plan still no change, that is, no wav or midi sounds and cd players no sounds, the error code is still the same. Thanks

Re: wmp 9 no sounds (9.00.00.3128)

Have recreated the problem with a repair installation wmp rolled back to 8 . Reinstalled windows updates critical files and ten in windows xp not involving wmp all installed ok. Windows Media Player was functioning fully after installation. This left four updates being 837272, 833998, Win Media Codecs and the now infamous trouble maker Win Media Player 9.7, which then reproduced the no sound problem. Interestingly though after wmp 9.7 was installed the version changed to 9.00.00.3075 and not 3128 which must be after the bonus pack is installed. All that remains now is how to delete wmp 9.7 and hope that it will work again. Your advice would be appreciated and thanks for your assistance.

    Glen,
Well, isn't this frustrating? Hate to just keep throwing things at you. But, (yeah - there's always a BUT) have you looked at this page:
WMP mini FAQ. There's a list of released hot fixes for WMP not too far down. Some are beyond 3128. They may help even if the description does not seem like it.
