    Ad Aware and/or Spybot

A recent article in PC World (June) suggested using BOTH Ad Aware 6 Plus and Spybot Search and Destroy. Anyone have any experience with this combination? I've been pleased with Spybot in the past, have never used Ad Aware.

I, like many other loungers, use both. They co-exist with no problems and each can pick up problems that the other one misses.

Use 'em both. Most Loungers seem to recommend that.

Same as Bob and Tony. I use both, they complement each other. Between those and SpywareBlaster, plus of course an anti-virus program kept up-to-date and a firewall, and a popup killer (I simply use the Google toolbar), things seem to be pretty well under control.

I read the same article, and I'm puzzled by PC World's endorsement of Spybot over Ad-Aware. For months and months, there was no update from Spybot. Then they came out with a new version (maybe 2 months ago). Since then, it's the same old same old--no updates. Nevertheless, I use both programs, as well as Spyblaster and Pest Patrol.

Ditto what Hans said. Multi-layer defenses with multiple tools are a must these days.

I think there has been at least one update since Spybot S&D 1.3 came out, but before then there wasn't one for 1.2 after 4th March. Quite shameful!

One difference between Spybot S&D and Ad-aware that I've found is that Ad-aware has to run in each userid/account you have on the PC, and it cannot clean anything if the account is not an Administrator account (i.e. it is a Limited Account). That said, Ad-aware for me tends to find a few more (non-dangerous, but ad-ware) cookies than does Spybot.

To add to Hans' endorsement of SpywareBlaster (should have had a much more accurate name, in my view) I would suggest SpywareGuard.

Hi there, I use both (got the advice from Woodys a while back) and they both work well together. One seems to find what the other does not.

    John,

I see, according to SpywareGuard's home page, that there may be compatibilty issues with other security software. Have you had any problems? Also, you may be right about the one Spybot update for 1.3. It's just frustrating--and a waste of time--to find no updates time after time.

I use SpywareGuard alongside Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, Startup Monitor and Norton Internet Security with no problems.

I use exactly the same as Tony, and am not aware of any problems.

Spyware Blaster and Guard are monitors for naughties, not file/registry scanners, so I wouldn't expect any interaction with Spybot or Ad-aware... But then again, nothing surprises me any more!

    Re: Ad Aware and/or Spybot

It's curious, then, why SpyGuard should warn about compatibility issues. I find nothing more specific on their site. In any case, I've installed it.

I could only find the following statement on Spyware Guard's website:
"We cannot guarantee that it will not conflict with other security software on your machine."
which doesn't strike me as a warning, more of a disclaimer!

    I just downloaded a fresh Spybot update today. <img src=/S/drop.gif border=0 alt=drop width=23 height=23> Try it.
