    Wild card? (Excel XP)

    Hi all,

Could anyone tell me if there is a wildcard character I can use in Excel statements?

To try and explain, this would be used in an IF statment instead of having to use a lot of OR options. I need to be able to return a result in cell X1 for example if cell Y1 has one of a number of possible entries. All these entries would contain the word "layer", but they could be "layer A", "layer_A", "layerA", "layer B", "layer_B" etc. I'd like to pull up the same result of, for example, "cell Y1 is a layer", in cell X1 if cell Y1 has the word "layer" in it.

I could do this by using an OR statment and try to include all possible combinations that might be used for "layer A", "layer B", "layer C" etc., but this would be cumbersome and I would probably miss some possible combinations that might be typed in.

I thought a better method would be to use a wild card in the IF statment if one existed. Like in the old DOS days for *.* etc.

So, for example in X1:......... =IF(Y1="LAYER widlcard character", "CELL Y1 IS A LAYER",0)

I hope I've managed to explain this clearly.

    Thanks,
    BH Davis

    How about this:

    =IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("layer",Y1)), "CELL Y1 IS A LAYER",0)

    Steve,

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this.

Yes, I tried that and it works just as I need. I'll add it to the worksheet this very afternoon. I don't do a wide enough variety of things with Excel to have a handle on all possible options to these kinds of situations. This board has been a great help!

    Thanks again~!!!!!!!!
