Linked Object in Word (Word 2003)

When I try to open or edit a linked or embedded Excel sheet in Word (by right clicking on the object and selecting edit or open) I get the message: Microsoft Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges.

    Can anyone please please help.

I was going to say that someone else posted this problem, too, but actually I was thinking of your post over on the General Office Solutions board. Sorry no one has found a workable solution so far. I'm including the link for reference so we don't cover the same ground again.

Did you have access to the excel file before it was embedded in the Word document?

Are you locked out in an earlier version of Word too?

I haven't seen this behaviour before and it may be related to new security features in Office 2003.

Whoops - I just read the linked thread and none of this will be relevant to solving your problem. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

    hi Sidney,

MS KB Article 835404 suggests this may be the result of a virus infection. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...4&Product=ofw2k.

    Sorry

    Hi Sidney,

After you've rid your system of any virus, as per the link mentioned by Macropod, you might try opening the document with OpenOffice (available for free from http://www.OpenOffice.org), and then saving it back out again as a .doc file. Doing that has saved my butt more than once when I had a file that Word wouldn't even open. At the very least, you may be able to recover the embedded data that way.

    Good luck!

Thanks for this - I am going through the motions on this and we will see if it solves my problem. I will say however that I don't have a problem actually opening the Word document or opening the linked excel sheet directly in excel. My problem is opening or editing the linked or embedded excel object from within the Word document, but we will see if this will solutions this anyway - I'll let you know - Thks again.

Thanks for this - It wasn't a virus though it was just asimple matter of disbling the Microsoft Office Plug-in in Norton Antivirus
