Private Folder Greyed Out (Windows XP Pro)

    Hi

Can anyone please tell my why the privacy tick box is greyed out in the screenshot, I have full administration rights and I am set as a workgroup and not a domain.

    Many Thanks

What file system are you using, NTFS of FAT32? This option is only available if you are using the NTFS system.

To check your file system do the following:
    1/ Right click "My Computer"
    2/ Left click "Explore"
3/ Right click "Local Disk (C"
    4/ Left click "Properties"
5/ "File System" is shown on the general tab and will be either NTFS or FAT32.

    Braddy,
This option is only available for folders included in your user profile. Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders private, they are available to everyone who uses your computer.
When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are private as well. For example, when you make My Documents private, you also make My Music and My Pictures private. When you share a folder, you also share all of its subfolders unless you make them private.
You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as NTFS.

    Hi Viking33

It's the start button I want to make unusable for my young granddaughter when she logs on as a limited user. but if I go to her profile or mine for that matter it is greyed out.

    Thanks for all replies

When you tell "Start button" did you mean "All Programs"? Or you want to restrict her access to her Documents folder also?

You can limit programs available from All Programs list removing them from Start MenuPrograms folder on her profile, All Users and Default User folders and moving the shortcuts to your Start Menu folder and making it private.

    Hi Kaplinb

She is very young and bangs any key on the keyboard while she is playing her games, she only use IE to play childrens games on the BBC website.

I don't want her to do any damage to my files.

I think I understand what you are saying about moving shortcuts from the start menu/program folder I will give it a try.

    Thanks

I was poking around for something else today and came across this site that has several tools that seem to do what you want. The 1st Security Agent appears to have the functions you are looking for.
