Outlook Rules Performance (OL 2003)

<img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Loungers

I have a kinda silly question:

What Rule format is more effiecnt:

a) Apply this rule after the message arrives sent to abc@123.com or def@456.net or ghi@789.org

Apply this rule after the message arrives sent to abc@123.com
Apply this rule after the message arrives sent to def@456.net
Apply this rule after the message arrives sent to ghi@789.org

I know that there is a limit to how many rules one can have, but I have a lot of rules in that format of example A, and it takes 25 minutes to process 1000 messages. I have now a total of 25 rules, and maybe 90% of them are of format A.

What can I do to speed up this process? I am running on a P-III 1GHz and also tested it on a P-III 850 MHz and the timing was not significantly different, so I tend to think its Outlook performance.

Thanks in Advance

Hi Wassim,

I have not experimented with your option B as I have always used the "OR" statement as indicated in your option A. I would be guessing if I said that the option A might be less time consuming.

Just out of curiosity, have you finished each rule with the "and stop processing..." clause. That would definitely reduce the time element.

Cheers, Bob

Yes I always end my rules with the Stop. I do this because some rules are so direct that all I need is a simple one action.

But with that, it still takes a long time. I managed to double the time when I tested it on a hard drive with less than 500 MB of free disk space. So now I am thinking it may be related to caching operations. This hard drive is specially left fragmented and almost 90% full, so I will test it again on a fresh 30 GB hard drive that is freshly formatted and I'll report the findings.
