Hotbar Problems

Suddenly we're dealing with hotbar hits in Ad-Aware, and I can't figure out if they are false or not. The only connection is the Redemption dll, which we license and use, but the hotbar-identified registry keys seem to turn up all over the place, as well as in the redemption keys. Does anyone else know anything about this? I've emailed Redemption, but it's too soon to get a reply.

This site should help, in particular the howard.edu link.

    Hi Charlotte,

Didn't know anything about Redemption until I went here after reading your post. I then Googled this site up to help you remove HotBar (you can follow removal instructions or click on a link to download an uninstaller) and get back to normal. Actually, the situation was resolved. Redemption is NOT a hotbar installer, but SpamBlocker, which is, apparently installs some of the Redemption libraries/keys. Lavasoft has now updated their reference files to avoid misidentifying Redemption.

I always feared that the Redemption library would be used for evil. I wonder whether there is any additional security available for it (i.e., library can be called only by authorized applications)? I suppose one could change the entry point in the Registry to something like abcdefg.hijklmnop (or something else a malware author is unlikely to guess). Would make deploying solutions more difficult, though.

It's merely a wrapper for Extended MAPI calls, so I don't really see what you could do to secure it. That's like saying that Outlook could be used for evil and ... oh, wait ... Extended MAPI doesn't have the same security problems that MAPI has, but there isn't anything that can't be misused.
