Currupt Outlook, OE & Word (Office 2K and XP Home)

I have Office 2k and XP Home. When I try to use spell check or, often when I open Outlook or Outlook Express, I get an error "Windows cannot open Word, Installation error 1450." When I tried to do repair under Outlook, I got an error message "Error 1402 could not open key on Hkey_current_user_usersoftwaremicrosoftNetShowREX. Verify you have sufficent access." When I went into regedit it would not open that key.

Also, in both Outlook and OE, I get the French dictionary for spell check and it gives me no option to change, saying "International Dictionary."

    Word will not always open.

When I get these errors I have rebooted and that more or less helps. the system seems to corrupt itself.

As a side note, Some times when I reboot, the main menu background will come up but no info on the start bar and no Desktop items show. If I do ctrl/alt/del all are running but it does not completely boot. If it lets me get to ctrl/alt/del, it doesn't always, and I do shutdown, it will work the next time. Related?

I use Norton SystemWorks and Zonelabs Pro. Any suggestions. Thanks for the help.
    Regards,

This sounds like a "permissions" problem to me. Are you logging on under an administrator account? If not, try that first. If that doesn't work, then it looks like some registry permissions are set incorrectly. <!mskb=236592>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 236592<!/mskb> can guide you through the process of setting the correct permissions for the required keys. The Windows registry is often updated, but if the required information cannot be written, error messages such as you outlined will be generated. Another indication that it is a registry permission problem is your statement that regedit "would not open that key".

Any idea what REX is? Under NetShow I only have "Player." If this program doesn't sound familiar or useful, maybe do a spyware scan (e.g., with Ad-aware or Spybot Search & Destroy) to see if it's something you want to get rid of.

I found one mention in the newsgroups (here, plus one in Japanese). It seems legitimate, but it doesn't have anything to do with Outlook and Word...

REX stands for "Relocatable Executable", file that establish connection between user computer and a server for streaming media service.

It looks like your installation is corrupt.

First, check your hard drive. Click Start | Run, type
    chkdsk /f
and click OK, then reboot your computer. If you have more than one partitions, check them also using CHKDSK D: /F command (where D: is your second partition - not CD Drive! - E: third partition etc.)

Second, check your computer for viruses and malware. Update your Norton Antivirus definitions files running LiveUpdate (from Antivirus window) and perform a full scan of your drive(s). If you did'n do it yet, download and install LavaSoft AdAware and Spybot - Search & Destroy. Check for and download the latest updates. Run system scan.

If you have enough room on your hard drive, copy the entire Office 2000 Installation CD to separate folder on your hard drive.

Next, be sure you are logged on with administrative rights. Open Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs, choose Microsoft Office 2000 from the list and Change, Repair options pointing Installer to the folder you created.

If it doesn't help, try completely remove Office (OFF2000: How to Completely Remove Microsoft Office), reboot the computer and install Office from Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Add a New Program | CD or Floppy | Next | Browse and point it to the folder on your hard drive. Don't forget to apply SR-1, SP-3 and all security patches after installation.

What exactly is the problem? How is it being exhibited? How do you know something is corrupt?

    I have a new system (AMD Athion64 SD3500 AM2 CPU, 2GB PC5300 Dual Chan DDR2, 20X DVD Burner, 160 GB SATA Harddrive)

    Office 2007 Home and Student

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)
    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

When I create mail in Outlook Express the spell checker comes up in French and proceeds to tell me my English words are spelled incorrectly. The down arrow block to select another language is fixed for French.

As I mentioned in the first post, this is a problem known to Microsoft.

Unfortunately, You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in Outlook Express 6.0 after you install the 2007 Microsoft Office system says it is up to you to find a spell checker. |MG| Free Download - Spell Checker for OE 2.1 is also mentioned in the thread. It probably won't hurt to try it.

You can also try Windows Live Mail Beta. Spell check seems to work fine in it.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

I have a 10 day old system system with XP Home SP2, with Office Home and Student 2007. French only on OE outgoing mail. I am happy with my new system except when talking with the tech. He wanted to unload all the stuff I had spent 2 days loading. Finally, I said forget it and looked on the web.

Found this discussion http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPo...8&SiteID=17. Seems this is a known problem. Options are install a patch speller, use speller in Word, wait for a MS patch, or learn French. I have not tried the patch from Swap Files [ http://www.swapfiles.com/download/dispelloe.html ]. Has anyone tried this solution?

    Joe,
I was trying to find out if any lounger had my experience and had tried this method. I will likely try http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2952 as you suggested. Perhaps the Beta will pass the test for a later fix.

    Thanks Again
