    NT4-Exch5.5 Upgrade > SBS 2003 ?

Our main NT 4 Server running our Exchange 5.5 server I'm hoping to upgrade shortly.

Whilst looking at possible new systems I have pondered on whether to go Small Business Server 2003 or stick with just Windows Server 2003 and add Exchange 2003 separately.

However when I look at the costs I'm puzzled however. For our 40 user site the costs I've worked out are approx :

    SBS 2003 Premium

I'm fairly certain (without looking it up) that the principle difference is in the number of licenses you are purchasing. I don't believe any of the individual products are crippled. Check the number of Client Access Licenses (CALs) you get for each of those offerings.

The SBS versions are limited. You can only have 75 users. I'm pretty sure the database size for both Exchange and SQL server is limited. The SBS machine must be the domain controller. According to the MS SBS site you must upgrade/migrate to a new server if you are running NT 4.0. There is much more information at the MS site. You can also look at Upgrading from Exhcange 5.5 for information about going from 5.5 to 2k3. Note: there may be additional considerations if you choose SBS 2003 instead of the full Exchange product - check the SBS documentation thoroughly.

As far as I can tell the licenses number is the same i.e.

Win Server 2003 inc 10 client

    Mike,
Most security people will tell you it is not a best practice to have all those applications on one server - that is Exchange, SQL Server, ISA, etc. However, the 'experts' are usually not spending anyone's money when making these recommendations. Just something else to think about.

Perhaps the incentive is there to lock you into Microsoft's product cycle... <img src=/S/overclocking.gif border=0 alt=overclocking width=99 height=47>

If the number of licenses is the same, then the only real consideration would be Joe's comment about running all of these items on one server. Security aside, the other fault is that if the box goes down, everything goes down.
